Moving home is one of the most significant upheavals we face in life, and trying to get everything organized can be a challenge. It is incredible how much stuff you can accumulate over a short space of time, and trying to sort through it all, pack the things you need, as well as sorting out all the paperwork that goes with it can be stressful! If you are looking for ways to help your home move go smoothly, this guide gives you four handy tips.

  1. Packing

Whether you are just moving a few streets away, or have PCS orders that take you further afield, packing for your move can be stressful. Help matters by starting to pack as early as you can, by putting the things that you want to keep, but rarely use, into boxes. Packing for a house move is also an excellent opportunity to declutter and get rid of any unnecessary items that you no longer need.

You will need plenty of boxes and tape to secure them, as well as material such as bubble wrap to put about your fragile items, so they don’t break while in transit.

It is a good idea to label each box with the room that it is designated for, and if you are super organized, you could even list what is inside and tape it to the box. That way, when you reach your new home and find you need your can opener for an emergency meal, you can look for it without having to open every box in your kitchen.

  1. Paperwork

Keep all of your household documents together in one folder, and pack it somewhere that you are likely to open early. That way, if during the first few weeks of living in your new home you find you are still paying a bill that you thought had been canceled, then you have the paperwork and phone number to hand so you can sort it out quickly.

  1. Get Quotes

If you are using a moving company, look into at least eight weeks before you move. That gives you plenty of time to get some quotes from different companies, so you get the best deal before booking them.

  1. Have a Plan for your Arrival

When you get to your new home, it is all action stations! However, it is a tiring process, so make sure you get the vital thing set up first. Having a bed made up ready for you to get into is a welcoming prospect, and it’s even more important if you have children. Therefore, it is a good idea to have an essential box ready to open when you arrive.

Things to have in an essential box include refreshments, some snacks, a set of bedding and towels, and some personal care items you might need for your first night.

Moving home is an exciting time, but packing and getting everything organized is not always fun. Plan ahead and use a little organization, and you will find go as smoothly as they possibly can, and you can just enjoy being in your new home.
