J*Company Youth Theatre Presents Seussical, Jr

Come on down to see the Dr. Seuss musical in town.

SEUSSICAL, JR. THE MUSICAL

Get ready to rhyme and have a good time because Seussical, Jr. is coming to town! J*Company Youth Theatre is bringing the musical extravaganza to the stage under the direction of Joey Landwehr and based on the works of Dr. Seuss. Gather the family and enjoy this magical event from the minds of Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty from January 15th through the 31st.

From there to here, from here to there, famous Dr. Seuss characters will be everywhere! In Seussical, Jr. the Cat in the Hat will narrate Horton the Elephant’s discovery of the world of the Whos while he guards an abandoned egg left in his care by the lazy Mayzie La Bird. Oh, the places you’ll go! Travel through the Jungle of Nool, the Circus McGurkus and the speck of dust that contains the Whos while Horton faces ridicule, danger and even a trial with support from Gertrude McFuzz. The powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community will be tested and triumph in this 60 minute version of the musical, Seussical.

Landwehr is the artistic director for J*Company Youth Theatre. In his time working with young artists in San Diego, he has received over 40 awards. Before moving to San Diego, Landwehr was a professional actor and director, working on and off Broadway, touring nationally and directing and soloing at Carnegie Hall. Landwehr has directed over 40 shows at J*Company.

In 2007, he was the recipient of the "40 Under 40" Award from San Diego Metropolitan Magazine for outstanding leadership in the arts and was honored as the 2011 Newsmaker in the Arts. During his career, he has worked with veterans Kaye Ballard, Betty Buckley, Kristin Chenoweth, Phyllis Diller, Michael Feinstein, Harvey Fierstein, Joel Grey, Sam Harris, Howard Keel and Patti LuPone.

Seussical is the brainchild of Ahrens and Flaherty. The duo often works in collaboration with Ahrens as the lyricist/bookwriter and Flaherty as the composer. Together, they wrote the Broadway musicals Once on This Island (nominated for eight Tony Awards), Seussical (which received a Grammy nomination) and Ragtime (nominated for 12 Tony Awards with a Best Original Score win). The two have been nominated for two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe awards for the animated film Anastasia

Gather family and friends to have a good time ‘til the very end. Seussical, Jr will be performed in the David and Dorothea Garfield Theatre. Tickets are available to reserve through the box office at (858) 362-1348, or purchase tickets online at the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture website
