Set along Humboldt Bay in Old Town Eureka, the California Redwood coast boasts more than 100 miles of pristine beaches and several State Parks; including the Redwood National Park, full of old growth Redwood trees and trails. Hiking, biking, and horseback riding are among the local favorites, as are the abundance of local boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, and a wide array of fine dining. A mere five hours from San Francisco, Eureka hosts a lively summer season, with a weekly Farmers Market (June - October), a Summer Concert Series that runs through August, and a Fourth Festival in July. But do not forget to book your stay at the Carter House Inn: famed for its quintessential charm and absolute luxury.
A Carter House Common Area, Great For Relaxation
Established in the early 1980s by Mark Carter, the family-owned boutique actually dates to the late 1880s. Carter discovered blueprints for the Victorian-style mansion in an antique shop several years earlier, a design crafted by the Newsom Brothers of San Francisco. Neighboring an intimate harbor of yachts and sailing vessels, the Carter House Inn is a true delight in every sense. In fact, the the family business now spans an enclave of four Victorian cottages with 33 luxury guest rooms.
A Cozy Carter House Cottage
Guests have described the Carter House Inn as “charming and welcoming,” “like an oasis,” “worth the trip,” and a “great find” with excellent service and accommodations; even touting several awards and accolades the boutique has received. Graciously appointed, the Inn extends unexpected luxuries throughout its very design; from antique accents and marbled fireside lounging, to en suite retreats, and four-poster beds.
Cater House Chef's Garden
It is no surprise that guests often book a return visit, touting the Inn by way of word-of-mouth marketing. On-site dining at Restaurant 301 is highly celebrated throughout the Northern California dining scene, offering seasonal blends of fresh seafood specials and organic produce. This inspired the construction of an extensive kitchen garden that now boasts a wide range of herbs, vegetables, fruits, and edible flowers, and even offers tours and a lecture series about organic practices. The restaurant’s wine menu has also garnered the coveted Grand Award by “Wine Spectator” magazine — only 77 awards have been appointed throughout the world.
