It’s that time of year again, time for winter vacations. Most people when they think of going skiing for a winter getaway they typically think of places such as Aspen or Tahoe as the most popular ski areas. However, I have found a few that are unique gems that some people may have never heard of before. Why fight the crowded slopes when you can ski new and exotic style places like never before. Here are seven remote ski locations for that special winter getaway whether it be a romantic getaway or a full family vacation, these places have something for everyone.

One of the most unheard-of ski resort is the Timberline Four Seasons Resort located in the Canaan Valley in Davis, West Virginia. It has been nicknamed the Jewel of the Highlands, people from all over have come to the resort. Its popular among those between Baltimore and Washington D.C. and even as far down as Wilmington. They offer a wide range of discounts from military and first responders to student and teachers on snow days. They even have a special discount for honor roll students, what would be a better way to get those kids to study harder than to offer them a great adventure at a low rate.

Don’t forget to check out the Timber’s Pub and Fireside Grille in the upper level of the resort, with its full-service bar and weekend, live entertainment it’s a place you don’t want to miss.

Looking for a great wedding venue during your vacation? Look no further than Deer Valley Ski Resort located in Park City, Utah. From lodge to luxury this area has over fifty places to stay. As well as a range of cafes to bakeries. Silverlake Restaurant is well known for the variety of foods including pizza and pot pies. This resort also offers a ski school and ski with a champion for those more expert skiers who want a challenge.

Another great unique location is the Steamboat Ski Resort in Colorado. This resort has trails for beginner up to experts, they have condos, townhomes, and villas, there are over 100 bars and restaurants in this area including several sleigh ride dinners, one of which being the Haymaker lodge where you ride a sleigh to the restaurant and enjoy a three course meal or you can opt for the snowcat dinner where you ride in a heated snowcat to your destination to indulge in a five-course Italian meal while dining at 9,716 ft. above sea level, this however, is more for couples as they don’t offer a children’s menu. Although on December 17th they do have a meet and greet with Santa, cookie decorating, parades, fireworks and you can even ski under the stars all while looking out through the Rocky Mountains.

Steamboat isn’t the only great resort in Colorado, Keystone Resort located in Summit County is also a great venue as they offer kids ski free under the age of twelve. They also offer childcare for children under the age of six so that you can take ski lessons or just enjoy a little alone time while your children are happy in a child-friendly environment suited to their needs and age-appropriate toys and games. They offer snow tubing and even have a spa. Amazing family fun with the giant snowball launch and a hunt for Sasquatch on their Big Foot Adventures.

Enjoy dinner at the Ski Tip Lodge with its rotating four course menu and famed desserts by the rustic fireplace. They also offer a dinner wagon ride for the whole family that brings not only dinner but family fun and entertainment for all ages.

Head a little ways north and you will find the Big Sky Resort of Montana with over fifty restaurants, bakeries, and cafes ranging from Italian to sushi and everything in between. Check out the famous Andiamo Italian Grille for some amazing pasta, Tuscan and even kid-friendly foods, as well as custom cocktails, beer, and wine. If you are in more of an American food mood check out M.R. Hummers with its signature steak, ribs, and sandwiches you are sure to find something mouthwatering to quench your appetite.

They offer a wide variety of activities from zipline tours to dog sledding. Snowshoe tours, sleigh rides and even a giant swing this resort has it all from cabins to condos you can pick your comfort level of rustic to luxury all while getting a facial, massage and even a full body wrap.

The north-west has some great vacation spots including the Jackson Hole Ski Resort located in Wyoming, just ninety miles from Yellowstone. They offer ice skating, snow tubing and sleigh rides, as well as winter bike tours and even paragliding. One of the best features of this resort is the scenic flights through the snow-covered mountains is a small aircraft. Perfect for the whole family or a romantic getaway. Kids under the age of fourteen stay free and even ski free with the purchase of a six-night stay. There resort restaurant offers a variety of food from bison to Thai and Asian food and even a vegetarian menu.

The biggest attraction at the resort is for those expert skiers, the legendary Corbet’s Couloir ski drop which looks like an upside-down funnel. This drop is not for the faint of heart or for the beginner skier. This is made especially for those who seek a challenge and aren’t afraid to take the plunge.

When looking for ski resorts one of the last places you would look would be California, but alas there is a great resort located in the Mono County area called Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. They offer cross-country skiing as well as a children’s area with Woolly’s Tube Park, a merry go round and even places to build a snowman. This section would be great for a birthday party as they also have a parade every Saturday and under the age of four ski free.

If you are looking for fine dining check out the Lake Front Restaurant, they offer a range of foods to suit all tastes. However, if you are in a more adventurous mood check out Yodler Restaurant and Bar, where they serve up Bavarian food and fun from bratwursts and schnitzel to fondue. Even a chance to blow the Swiss alphorn while there. This resort also has a Starbucks close by for those who need their coffee fix.
