An Evening of Jazz and Dance by the San Diego Ballet

San Diego Ballet Blends Jazz and Dance in a Fun New Show

San Diego Ballet

Because who doesn’t love watching beautiful dance? This weekend, enjoy a graceful performance paired with amazing, live music. On February 5th, February 6th, and February 7th, San Diego Ballet is putting on An Evening of Jazz and Dance. This show features a mixed repertoire of dance set to the live music of Gilbert Castellanos.

For those of you who don’t know, Gilbert Castellanos is a San Diego jazz music icon. Castellanos is a classically-trained musician, and he generally combines contemporary jazz music with Latin influences. Castellanos has been performing in San Diego since the ‘90s, and has even released an album of his music. In addition to Castellanos’s music, An Evening of Jazz and Dance will also feature a tribute to Dave Brubeck, an American jazz musician.

The show is choreographed by Javier Velasco, one of the co-directors of the San Diego Ballet. In the past, he has choreographed for the La Jolla Playhouse, the Old Globe, and the San Diego Repertory Theatre. While working with the San Diego Ballet, Velasco has choreographed over 70 original pieces for the company. Velasco has also been awarded the Creative Catalyst Fellowship by the San Diego Foundation.

San Diego Ballet is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1991. Every year, this ballet company performs a handful of shows—including the always festive The Nutcracker—throughout the fall and winter months. In addition to The Nutcracker, their 2015-2016 season has included Romeo et Juliet and Carnival of the Animals. An Evening of Jazz and Dance closes out San Diego Ballet’s 2015-2016 season.

Because the San Diego Ballet is a nonprofit organization, they rely on donations to help put on their shows every year. Unfortunately, ticket sales only cover about 50% of the San Diego Ballet’s yearly budget, so local contributions are what really keep the dancers twirling. What to help out in a more personal way? The San Diego Ballet has an “Adopt a Dancer” program. This program allows you to lend financial support to your favorite dancer and help them succeed! Sponsorships go towards providing a young company dancer with everything they need to devote their time and lives to dance. Even better, these donations come with fun perks, such as an invitation to the Dancer Reception, and even free tickets!

An Evening of Jazz and Dance is showing at the Lyceum Theatre in San Diego from February 5th-February 7th. Velasco is confident that this performance will incite passion and spark the imagination. As the final performance of the San Diego Ballet’s 2015-2016 season, this is a show you have to see! For more ticket information, visit the San Diego Ballet website.
