Breakfast Cafés in Solana Beach

Enjoy these hidden gems near the Northern Coast

San Diego’s year-round sunny weather motivates people to enjoy the most important meal of the day while soaking up some sunshine. The charming community of Solana Beach along the Northern coast of San Diego County, has recently emerged as a hot spot for several quaint and friendly breakfast eateries. With so many places to choose from, it can be difficult to find the best place to dine. But don’t you worry about a thing; Here are three hidden gems that will brighten up your a.m. in this beautiful city of Solana Beach.

  1. Beach Grass Café

Opened in 1999, Beach Grass Café is a great indoor/outdoor bistro, with welcoming staffs and an extensive breakfast and lunch menu. Located on Highway 101, they have an excellent view of the beach. Unique menu items, like Oatmeal Pancakes with roasted pears and house-made marshmallow fluff and Polenta wrapped in banana leaf with eggs and spicy Louisiana sausage, are what makes this place stand out. Try the homemade Turkey chorizo hash and eggs, topped with charred serranos, potatoes, onions, and peppers. Other great dishes include a shrimp and avocado salad, with hearts of palm, shaved fennel, grapefruit, and almonds.

Kevin Nelson, the owner, decided to open his own restaurant, after working under other restaurateurs for years. Nelson says they are constantly revamping their menu to serve the most satisfying dishes to the guests while creating new options for regular visitors. Regular staff input and tastings are held in order to create better recipes. Nelson recently opened a new bakery in Carmel Valley, and is looking into another location for the Beach Grass Café. Their mission is simple, explains Nelson, “We want to provide a clean and friendly environment with great tasting, homemade food, to delight our customers”.

  1. Naked Café

This health-conscious restaurant with natural, and “naked” recipes, strives to nourish the body and soul. Here the emphasis is on simple, savory, wholesome ingredients. With a cheerful and casual environment, the cafe offers choices for a well-balanced breakfast. Plate of Prosperity is a local favorite, made up of scrambled egg whites, spinach, soy sausage and feta cheese, served with organic quinoa, grilled zucchini and a corn tortilla. For a spice-infused dish, try the Dual Delight, a sesame ginger beef and chicken blend, served over rice and topped with steamed summer vegetables. The ultra-healthy Goddess Wrap is a spinach wrap with sautéed sesame ginger tofu, brown rice and veggies topped with Shiitake mushrooms and a side of red bean salsa. Customize your plate by choosing from a vast array of sides and substitutes.

The great selection of coffee and tea beverages are another perk of dining at Naked Café. Some unique drinks include Malaysian Mocha, Pumpkin Spice Tea Latte and Golden Fairy Dust (Chai tea with ginger, soy milk and cinnamon). Naked Café is now serving Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach and Point Loma with their wholesome breakfasts. All locations are open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

  1. Hideaway Café

Once the roof garage of an old building, this café is a truly hidden gem in the Solana Beach community.  This cozy spot, covered in vines, is a friendly joint serving comfort food that will make you feel right at home. They offer a classic breakfast selection including Mexican burritos, French toast, pancakes, and Omelettes. Favorites are the Polish sausage & Cheddar Omelet, served with a potato pancake fresh off the griddle, and the California French Toast, made with Hawaiian sweet bread and infused with hints of zesty orange.

While all the food tastes amazing, what keeps guests returning is their specialty, house-made salsa served with most breakfast plates. It is made fresh every day in their tidy little kitchen. This place is nothing like the ordinary breakfast restaurants in San Diego County. The smiling waitress, Judy, calls many of the customers by name, as she serves a freshly baked treat such as Pumpkin or Cranberry Orange Nut bread. Open daily 7 a.m. to 2 p.m, remember, the early bird gets the breakfast!
