May 5th marks another Cinco de Mayo! It's a wonderful holiday here in San Diego, filled with a myriad of culture, music, and (of course) tequila. Nothing is worse than finding a disappointing Cinco de Mayo celebration, however. If we're going to take the time to celebrate this regional holiday we have to do it up right! We’ve found some of the hottest spots to celebrate the 5th of May in style... and possibly with a margarita in your hand.

Old Town Fiesta Cinco de Mayo

In its 33-year annual celebration, Old Town San Diego welcomes you to their fiesta celebrating the rich culture and fun of the Cinco de Mayo holiday. The celebration extends from May 6-8 and is an event with free admission for all. Forming possibly the largest celebration of its kind in the southern California region, this three-day bash will be full of culture and festivities for all ages.

Live entertainment will take place throughout the weekend on three different stages, with over 40 bands keeping the crowd constantly up on their feet and dancing. With a mix of authentic and modern performances, there’s even a lively section just for kids to dance! Past musical groups have included Desert Sands, Los Hollywoods, and even Ballet Folklorico.

To quench your thirst, try your hand at tasting tequila at high-end sampling areas, or grab a cold beer as you take a stroll through Old Town Fiesta's beer garden. Other restaurants throughout the event will also offer their own variations of drinks like refreshing margaritas or a classic horchata. More than ten restaurants and cantinas will be featured at the fiesta, bringing their authentic Mexican cuisine.

Explore all that Old Town area has to offer with historic demonstrations, stagecoach rides, and museums. The festivities will feature equestrian performances, as well as the low rider lane, a special showcase for car enthusiasts to exhibit their custom low rider cars. Definitely not an event to miss!

CincoTeca Dos

Get ready for a day full of great music and tasty Mexican food at Puesto at The Headquarters in Downtown San Diego with the CincoTeca Dos celebration. Admission to the event is free and is open to all ages for a fun and enjoyable Cinco de Mayo party! The day starts at 3:30pm on Thursday May 5th and will continue until 9:30pm.

To satisfy your Mexican food cravings while soaking up the musical talent, restaurants Casa Noble Tequila and Modelo Especial have you covered. Grab a taco or take part in their festive Cinco de Mayo drink specials with frosty margaritas and beer galore! Bring your party spirit and your appetite for a day full of great food and drinks this Cinco de Mayo as you listen to a talented line-up of musicians. Don’t forget to bring your sombrero to CincoTeca Dos!

Cinco de Mayo Trail Run

If you’re one of the stronger, godlike people in life and actually prefer exercising to eating and drinking (as opposed to us mere mortals), the Cinco de Mayo Trail Run is perfect for you. Beginning at 6:30am on Saturday, May 7th, participants can warm up as they prepare to take on the Lake Poway Trail.

No matter your ability or age, there’s a race designed perfectly for your skill set. Both the 5K and the 10K will wind through the gorgeous Blue Sky Ecological Reserve, taking your mind off your strenuous run. The 5K is a great option for runners who want a steady race or even families wanting to take a leisurely hike. The 10K option is a grueling one, consisting of a lot of vertical trail, sure to kill your quads in no time.

Children of all ages are encouraged to participate in the event, and those 7 and under can run in The Kathy Crafts Young Memorial Kids Race, a fun 1/3 mile trail that encourages kids to stay active. The run is even strategically placed so that kids get the excitement of running through the official finish line! Over $1,600 worth of cash awards will be awarded. In addition, all participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, virtual swag, and snacks to replenish them after every race.

Tickets vary depending on ages groups and races from around $15-$45, but if you happen to be an active-duty firefighter, law enforcement, or member of the military you can expect to receive a 50% off discount.
