Desserts at Bentley’s Steak & Chop House and Pamplemousse Grille in Del Mar

SWEETNESS YEAR-ROUND

It’s the season for flowers and chocolates, however, you don’t need a holiday to satisfy your sweet tooth. What better way to put the finishing touches on a superb dinner or a spin on the usual apertif.  It can be as simple as fresh berries or a scoop of ice cream to the more extravagant desserts that oftentimes resemble a small work of art in appearance, taste, and experience. Here are a few restaurants that provide some delightful options to finish your dining experience on the right (sweet) note

Bentley’s Steak & Chop House at 162 South Rancho Santa Fe Road in Encinitas serves Ghirardelli chocolate brownies with Häagen-Daz ice cream and drizzles of Ghirardelli chocolate and sabayon sauce. Not only is the dessert appetizing in appearance, but it satisfies the craving for a something sweet after enjoying their shrimp cocktail, deep fried calamari, and a steak or prime rib. The dessert is big enough for two to share after such a sumptuous dinner. If chocolate’s not your thing, or you crave a different flavor sensation, try their lemon posett with a graham cracker crust. In a word: yummy!

For a less expensive meal of fresh Mexican food, try Que Pasa Mexican Grill, and after you’ve finished their carne asada, go for a churro or two. This authentic, “south of the border” favorite is located in Rancho Santa Fe, so crossing the border is not necessary. Also don’t miss out on their traditional fried ice cream.

For more decadent desserts or the opportunity to see pastry chefs exhibit their talents, go to Pamplemousse Grille in Del Mar. Their apple tarte tatin, pear tarte tatin or their chocolate bread pudding (may be the best bread pudding that you have ever eaten) are all to-die-for! If you want to dine in La Jolla, George’s California Modern (previously known as George’s at the Cove) has a brown sugar cake with ginger-poached persimmons, coconut sorbet and black sesame crisps that is almost worth the trip by itself.

If you want to celebrate in style with an incredible dessert, contact Truly Scrumptious Cakes, where each dessert is a work of art. From dinner party fare to elaborate wedding cakes, they can customize most requests. They also produce cakes for children’s birthdays that can range from a baseball mitt and ball to a fairy princess castle, and all of it edible.

For that night at home, Champagne Bakery continues to deliver a trip to France without the jet lag. Also, Karen Krasne started the renaissance, movement and upgrade in dessert quality in San Diego County with her Extraordinary Desserts.

There are many places with wonderful desserts, and I think that these will tickle your fancy and give you many opportunities for terrific food before settling in for the sweet stuff.

Bon Appetit-sweet!
