Eyes of Persephone

Dawn Sebaugh

Born in Moorseville, North Carolina, artist Dawn Sebaugh is the owner and founder of Mara Dawn Studios. Currently residing in San Diego, Dawn Sebaugh has an impressive resume. She participates in a number of local events each year, including our recent European Market event. Sebaugh has numerous accomplishments, including having one of her own paintings gracing the cover of FINE Magazine, while later in 2014 she won first prize at the La Jolla Art and Wine Festival's Juried Show. Now, Dawn Sebaugh stops by to speak with us about her inspiration, her paintings and how you can get in touch with her.

When did you start painting?

I started very early! I sold or bartered my first painting at 12 years old! I wanted a pony, so my daddy said if I could earn enough money I could have one... so I traded a painting for a pony! Thank you [for] that, dear man.

What inspires your designs?

I believe its all inside... I start with a blank canvas and thoughts of color, and it just happens...

What kind of materials do you use in your work?

It depends. I use a palette knife mostly and occasionally a brush. I love to mix charcoals with acrylic to create some beautiful colors and shadows. But also, I love to experiment with most any unique applications I can find.

At our recent European Market event, you painted some gorgeous glass vases, wine glasses, and hand-painted ornaments. What was it like designing and painting on these 3D, often spherical objects?

That was my first time painting on ornaments! I love the Tiffany look so I chose some of my original mosaic designs. The vases and glasses are actually "found glass" from the 1920's.

Do you paint commissioned work? If so, how should someone contact you in the future for commissioned work?

I work mainly with interior designers and architects around the world that design for hotels and commercial real estate. Usually I receive swatches of room colors and speak with the individual designers for their vision of the decor, and I paint emotionally depending on this criteria.

I can be contacted by email at dawn.sebaugh@gmail.com or through my website: Dawn Sebaugh.

Finally, do you have a favorite painting or two?

Yes... Eyes of Persephone, and the one I finished last night (the first after my stroke of Feb 2015) which has yet to be named!
