Celebrate this Independence Day with some tunes from the San Diego Symphony! Located at the Embarcadero Marina Park South, the Bayside Summer Nights is an annual outdoor summer concert series with a pre-4th of July special called Star Spangled Pops. It features classic movie tunes, Broadway hits, popular songs, sunset views, and a firework finale. The concerts are performed on a stage on the San Diego Bay right behind the San Diego Convention Center. This event takes place from July 1st to July 3rd at 7:30pm but includes pre-concert activities for kids at 6:00pm. Conducting this spectacular concert series is Matthew Garbutt.
Garbutt is an innovative programmer and a talented, creative conductor. Originally a Los Angeles native, he began his musical studies at age ten and began conducting at age sixteen. He has attended various schools, ranging from the Idyllwild School of Music and Arts, all the way to the Academy for Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna; he even spent some time at the California Institute of the Arts. Currently, Garbutt is the Staff Conductor for the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and has held that position for more than 25 years. Joining Garbutt on stage is vocalist, Melissa Errico.
Melissa Errico is a remarkable vocalist who has been recognized for her roles as a Broadway starlet. She starred as Betty Haynes in Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and as Cosette in Les Misérables, followed by her sensational portrayal of Kitty in Anna Karenina and Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Most recently, she performed in Camelot and The Sound of Music to sold-out audiences. She has been honored with the Lucille Lortel Award, six Drama Desk nominations, two Helen Hayes Awards, four Outer Critics Award nominations, and three Drama League Honors. For Star Spangled Pops, Errico will be accompanied by the vocal talent of the San Diego Master Chorale.
The San Diego Master Chorale is an assembly of the region’s greatest singers. Consisting of approximately 100 vocalists, this chorale ensemble was established in 1961 and has achieved great success since then, including legendary choral composer Alice Parker personally presenting them with the ASCAP/Alice Parker Award for Innovative Choral Programming at the 2009 Chorus America Convention. Their mission is to promote and preserve the art of choral music through performance, education, and diverse community outreach.
The San Diego Symphony Orchestra has been performing for over 100 years and was the first California orchestra to reach that achievement! It has been designated a Tier 1 Orchestra by the League of American Orchestras and offers a diverse range of concert experiences to suit a variety of musical tastes, ranging from classical repertoire to symphonic pop.
The previous Star Spangled Pops concerts’ included musical references to films like Star Trek, Star Wars, Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and much more! Pre-concert kid activities include arts and crafts and a musical “petting zoo” where the little ones can try out different musical instruments. With performances like these, it’ll be an event you won’t want to miss. Be sure to expect arts, crafts, good tunes, sunset views, and an awesome time. Oh, and don’t miss that firework finale!
