Red O

The long-awaited Red O opened in La Jolla last month, bringing an anticipated menu of high-end Mexican cuisine from celebrity chef Rick Bayless (of Iron Chef and PBS’s Mexico: One Plate at a Time fame). The authentic Baja/Tijuana fare includes succulent shrimp ceviche and crispy short rib barbacoa street tacos, to name a few. Cocktails are a must, since Red O has an incredible selection of tequila and flavorful, hand-crafted drinks. You’ll want to enjoy a meal in the comfortable, coastal-style dining room, or hit up the indoor/outdoor patio bar for happy hour around the three fire pits this summer. 4340 La Jolla Village Drive

Chula Vista Brewing

Chula Vista Brewery

Chula Vista opened its newest craft brewery last month, just in time for a Cinco De Mayo grand opening celebration. There are five brews currently on tap, including a citrus IPA, a smooth Blonde Ale, a red ale with notes of caramel and toasted hops, an American-style pale ale, and a dark porter with chocolate and coffee. The classical space features brick and wood elements for a casual atmosphere, which is perfect for a neighborhood-oriented brewery. 294 3rd Avenue

You and Yours Distilling Company

You and Yours Distilling Co.

A good cocktail is usually hard to find, but not anymore. East Village has got the spot––You and Yours Distilling Company. With an onsite distillery, You and Yours Distilling Company crafts its own take on the timeless spirits gin and vodka. Order up a flight for a taste of each, or opt for one of the enticing cocktails. The atmosphere is delightfully airy; white-washed brick, salvaged wood, and concrete meet velvet and copper decor for a sophisticated urban feel. The craft spirits and relaxed space come together for an experience aptly named. You and yours may have a new favorite spot for Friday drinks! 1495 G. Street

Afters Ice Cream

Afters Ice Cream

Afters Ice Creams is the exciting new dessert hotspot that’s quickly taken over Southern California. The hip hangout features unique handcrafted flavors like Jasmine Milk Tea, Vietnamese Coffee, and Cookie Butter, in addition to their signature menu item, the “milky bun.” Take any flavor of ice cream, mix in any topping, and sandwich the icy treat between a warm glazed doughnut bun. The crazy concoction is absolutely delicious and bound to be the hottest thing in San Diego this summer. Afters Ice Cream is poised to open its new location in Pacific Beach at the end of May.
