Hard to be seen, easy to be noticed is how Ducati describes the magic of the new Diavel cycle. Sporting the spirit of Italian pride and drive, the Diavel has once again set a higher standard for luxury motorcycles; perfectly blending state-of-the-art technology, innovative design and extraordinary riding pleasure.
“It’s a different kind of mentality from the other Ducatis,” notes Paul Lima, owner of GP Motorcycles in San Diego. “The Diavel is sure to satisfy the most discriminating rider. Their engineers say it is the culmination of more than three years of research and technology. The result is a combination of technology, design, speed, agility and beauty. The Diavel is a Ducati in every single detail. In its own way, the Diavel sets a new precedence for sport and tour bike enthusiasts. When you want to be noticed before you are gone [with] a twist of your wrist on the throttle, the Diavel is the Ducati of choice.”
With a commanding presence and authentic Ducati Desmodromic performance, the Diavel perfectly blends form, function and comfort. Engineers and designers purposefully evaluated every detail before production, ensuring the bike’s ultimate experience for sport and tour riders. And according to Josh Springsped, of GP Motorcycles, “There definitely is not another bike like it. The Diavel has a distinctive design.”
Breeding the world’s finest competitive and sport motorcycles since 1926, Ducati has established its reputation on a long line of racing victories and design innovations that are clearly present in the new Diavel. So how did Ducati create an excellent balance between form and performance that has motorcycle enthusiasts anxious to discover the magic of the Diavel?
For starters, the Diavel has a not-so-timid 162 horse-power engine and colossal 941 lb-ft of torque – getting you where you want to go, while keeping you in the action with power to spare. The engine is set back from the front wheel in the fashion of a cruiser and the seat is low, affording a lean appearance that is accommodating to a range of riders. Three riding modes – sport, touring and urban – give you power and control of the massive high performance engine, taking you from zero to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds.
“The revised intake and exhaust ports combined with radical adjustment of the cam timing have enabled Ducati to achieve a fantastic torque curve at low rpm, which remains strong through a wider rev-range,” notes Ducati Design. “The increase in bottom-end torque is managed by Ducati’s Ride-by-Wire (RbW) system to considerably enhance the Diavel’s effortless ridability, while ensuring plenty of power remains on tap for high-rpm riding.”
The engineer and design team did not stop there; the Diavel comes with an ABS and traction control systems as well. It can bring you to a controlled, complete stop faster and safer than ever imagined – much like one expects from a Superbike. A massive 240 section rear tire is a perfect example of how Diavel designers used a no-compromise attitude when applying their wish list of features. The sheer width of rubber communicates so much power and style that the R&D team vowed to find a way to make it handle – even if they knew the image would send a seismic shock through the industry.
The latest ground-breaking Ducati is available in two versions: The brand new Diavel and the flagship Diavel Carbon with a character-forming mix of aesthetic and performance components from carbon fibre bodywork to forged and specially machined Marchesini wheels.
“The challenge of building a muscular silhouette over a pure-bred competition motor had to be met with determination and a delicate touch, and the result is a frontal area that looks like a power athlete on the starting blocks,” explains the team at Ducati Design responsible for the project. “With the front wheel kept close to the Diavel’s body and using the short tail of a sport bike, we were able to blend this muscular design with a chassis that matched.”
Ducati is the essence of Italian-style motorcycles and Diavel is the epitome of the new mentality that is visible in the design and performance of this quantum leap forward for the Italian moniker. The Diavel is a seductive high performance machine that redefines the essence of everything about a sport bike with the power and prowess of a racing winner; mirroring the moniker’s philosophy for innovation and need to push boundaries of design in the name of exciting motorcycles. The Diavel will no doubt dominate performance categories and safety standards around the world; but it is the experience of the ride that will have riders and motorcycle enthusiasts ready to roll.
