Taking a Staycation in Carlsbad

If you live in San Diego and are looking to escape the hustle and bustle, taking a weekend trip to Carlsbad may be just what you need. Carlsbad is only 30 miles from San Diego, and driving from San Diego to Carlsbad will take you only a little more than an hour.

Once settled into one of the many fine hotels in Carlsbad San Diego, you will find lots of enjoyable things to see and do. Here are some of the best:

1. Take a Walking Tour of the City

Walk The City Tours provide 90-minute walking tours that take you through both Carlsbad and neighboring Encinitas. Guides will entertain you with stories about the towns and the people that helped shape them, and they will also introduce you to the best restaurants and shops there.

2. Visit LEGOLAND Resort and Water Park

If you have children (or are just young at heart), LEGOLAND is a must-see. At the resort, you will find more than 60 rides and other attractions, including the new NINJAGO World, where you and your family can train to become ninjas. At the water park, you will find 20 oversized Lego models that spray water at you as well as a 45-foot tower that immerses you in the world of Lego.

3. Take an Air Tour

Carlsbad Air Tours can provide you with amazing views of San Diego County in their luxury plane that features a 2-pilot crew as well as leather seats and air conditioning. They can take you on a variety of excursions, such as along the coastline, over the Palomar Mountain or by the charming villages of Rancho Santa Fe and Temecula.

4. Go to the Aquarium

There is nothing quite like visiting an aquarium, especially if you have kids. The SEA LIFE Aquarium offers lots of wonderful underworld attractions, many of which are interactive, and it lets you get up close and personal with a wide variety of sea creatures. Best of all, it is right next to LEGOLAND.

5. Go on a Beer Tour

If you are looking for more adult fun, you should consider going on a Scavengers Beer Tour. Called one of the most unique beer tours in America by Forbes Travel, they take you on an open-air safari through San Diego County's best breweries, and, of course, you can sample beers at each one in this all-inclusive adventure.

6. Ride Go Karts

The go-karts at the K1 Speed Go Kart Track are not like the ones you rode on as a kid. They are really fast, with 20 horsepower engines, and you get to ride them on a 60,000 square-foot track that is the longest on the entire West Coast. They also have a fantastic game room with simulators, pool tables and much more.

7. Visit a Historic Ranch

The Leo Carrillo Ranch and Historic Park is a beautiful 27-acre park on the site of what was once a working ranch. Walking along the hand-crafted adobe buildings and other historic structures is like taking a walk through time. On Saturdays, they provide a 90-minute guided tour, and on other days you are free to take a self-guided tour along the 4-mile Rancho Carrillo Trail.

As you can see, there is plenty to see and do in Carlsbad. It’s just a matter of making the quick drive north to check it out.
