6 Tips for Designing the Perfect Bedroom


Given the amount of time we spend in our bedrooms, and what we get up to in there, they are worthy of special attention when designing your home. Here are the 6 key ingredients for the perfect bedroom environment.

Most of us use our bedrooms for two things above all else, sleeping, and, well…‘sleeping’. Also, some people like to keep a desk in their room for work. Many women (and some men) will have an area set aside for makeup and beauty where they might spend a lot of their time. An adjustable lighting system which can be taken from very dim to very luminous will have you covered in all situations.

Another big advantage of adjustable lighting is that, should you wake up in the middle of the night, you don’t have to scorch your retinas!

A Relaxed Color Scheme

The color of a room and the shades we choose can have a significant impact on the way that being in that room makes us feel. One of the most common mistakes people make when designing their bedroom is that they only consider the color of the walls. Remember, once all your furniture and clothes are in the room, the colors on display can change dramatically.

A Cool Temperature

The ideal temperature for sleeping is between 60 and 67 degrees. If you don’t sleep alone, you might even want to lower it a couple degrees more. There are a number of things you can do to better control the temperature in your room. Positioning your bed near to the window means that if it gets too hot or cold, you can easily adjust the window accordingly. If you can afford to add in some kind of controllable heating system then the finer the control it gives, the better, as this will allow you to precisely heat your room.

If you have a computer in your bedroom, or even a games consoles, you should factor in the amount of heat that they can generate.

The Right Bedding

Obviously, your physical comfort will be a crucial factor in determining how easily you can get to sleep. There is no such thing as a bed that is too comfortable (as long as you can still get out of it in the morning of course), so you shouldn’t be afraid to make the necessary financial investment. Reduce the Noise

Unnecessary noises during the night are going to make getting to sleep a lot more difficult. While external noises when trying to sleep can be very annoying, many of them are ultimately self-inflicted and avoidable. Minimizing the amount of technology present in your room, limiting it to what you absolutely need to have in there, can make a big difference.

Relaxing Scents

Finally, do not underestimate the power that scents have over us! Those scented candles that are marketed as being relaxing do in fact work. The effect is not as dramatic as some people imagine it to be, but adding some lavender scents to your room, for example, can really help you to relax.
