Amore At First Bite: Vigilucci’s Trattoria Italiana in Leucadia

FINE dining is a true art form, one that has progressed through formalities into the simple elegance and romance of more casual dining in eateries like Vigilucci's Trattoria Italiana in the coastal town of Leucadia. Fun and friendly, yet elegantly casual, the romantic and dimly lit atmosphere is perfect for a Valentine’s date night. The expansive windows, dog-friendly patios and an authentic Florentine wood–burning brick oven add a whimsical touch to the authentic experience that can be described as no less than Italian art.

A warm and personal spirit can be felt as soon as one arrives at Vigilucci’s and only continues to grow while indulging in such appetizers as the Carciofini al Forno (seasoned and roasted artichoke hearts) and a glass of wine, such as the heavy Tuscan red, Muralia, made by owner Roberto Vigilucci’s childhood friend from Italy. Paired with such sensory experiences as live piano in the evening hours of every night, one is guaranteed to relax into a blissful ambiance of smiling conversation.

Whether appetizer or entree, any dish which features the fresh and fluffy mozzarella is worth a taste. The Pollo Parmesan, for example, could easily challenge the title of best of the traditional dishes. If looking for a more health–conscious entree, the Vegetali Alla Griglia is heaped with a colorful assortment of open–fire–grilled mixed vegetables that is satisfying and filling for vegetarian diners or equally delicious when paired with grilled chicken or fish.  And for dessert, the citrusy lemon of the Torta della Nonna, paired with the crunch of pine nuts, will satisfy every sweet tooth.

As can be seen through the magical charisma and laughter of the accent-infused family of their staff and patrons, every hour seems to be happy at Vigilucci’s. Add to that their famous weeknight (4–7 pm) and weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sundays from 11-6 pm) happy hours and Vigilucci’s may just challenge a nearby park for the happiest place on Earth. Discounted treats featured on the extensive happy hour menu include $5 glasses of house wine, $3.75 pints of a local favorite, Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA, and appetizer specials, including the ever-popular prime beef braised meatballs and ahi sliders. In addition to happy hour, specials are offered throughout the week, such as Monday’s date night, which includes two entrees and two glasses of house wine for $39.

Good dining is more than food. It is an experience of the palate as well as ambiance, personality and heart. Whether hosting a private party in the intimacy of the cozy garden or in the exclusive and whimsical cottage, dining for a celebration or coming in for a relaxed happy hour, Vigilucci's Trattoria Italiana guarantees to give one FINE experience.
