Summer stands for racing season in Del Mar, and racing season inevitably calls for the hottest fashions of the year. Most people who visit San Diego are unaware of what a huge horse culture we have here. People come from all over to train, board their horses, and ride––not just enjoy the sunshine! From the start, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has attracted a largely stylish audience, especially ladies, with its Opening Day celebrations and elaborate hat contest.
The hat contest, sponsored by Studio Savvy alongside Joe Cuivello is a “great platform to go crazy––the devil is in the details,” says Studio Savvy owner Deena Von Yokes. And for the opening day contest, the bigger and bolder, the better. “The best thing I can advise is to know what category you want to enter before planning your out- fit,” Von Yokes says.

The hat contest actually has five categories, including Best Fascinator, Most Glamorous, Best Theme, and, Von Yokes’ favorite, Most Outrageous. Contestants can sign up at Plaza de Mexico on July 19th from 11am to 3pm, with awards taking place at 5pm in the Winner’s Circle.
Hats aren’t the only fashion-must for the racetrack. Says Von Yokes, “It’s about the whole look... Think dress first [because] you’re going to want something that is flattering and comfortable.” That last bit, says Von Yokes, is the most important part, “No matter if you’re going more formal or casual, comfort is key, because it’s a long day.” For more about the Del Mar Opening Day Hat Contest, visit dmtc.com.
