Summer in Little Italy, San Diego

There are numerous things to do this summer in San Diego, such as explore the San Diego Zoo, go to Sea World, spend the day at the beach, or visit an aquarium. Sure, these activities are fun for kids and adult alike, but tourists will pack the parks and beaches. Instead of fighting the crowds, plan a day to explore Little Italy in downtown San Diego. Enjoy a day supporting and getting to know the local community.

Saturdays are particularly great days to spend in Little Italy during the summer. Saturday mornings, starting at 8am, the Little Italy Mercato Farmer’s Market is open for pedestrians to peruse. With over 130 vendors participating in the farmer’s market, there is sure to be something of interest for everyone. From stalls with flowers, fresh produce, fresh fish, and artisan-made novelties, it will be easy to stay occupied until the market closes at 2pm. Pick up some fresh pastries, local honey, or jam during your jaunt on West Cedar Street. Consider taking home a house plant to liven up your home or office a bit; pick up a few spices to add to your cabinets, or buy new and different coffee beans for you morning cup of joe.

After spending the morning perusing the stalls filled with unique goods and sampling some of the fresh-baked food, you can explore the many shops and boutiques in Little Italy. Stop by the Little Apple and pick up a new outfit with influences of the Southern California lifestyle and a dash of New York City. Vocabulary is another shop that offers a great selection. Look into Redo My Shoe to find the right shoes for that new outfit. And, of course, the right accessories are essential to finish off the perfect look. Shopping can be exhausting, so don't hesitate to grab a bite to eat. Whatever you’re craving, it’s likely you can find it in Little Italy. ​The Waterfront Bar and Grill has a selection of Mexican-inspired food, burgers, and build-your-own grilled cheese along with cold brews. Bolt Brewery offers pizza, brews, salads, and wings for their patrons to choose from. If desserts are calling to you, then make sure you stop by Extraordinary Deserts. Cookies, cakes, brownies, pastries, candy bars, ice creams and sorbets, and gluten-free options will satisfy your sweet tooth. With your belly full, head over to the Amici Amphitheatre. 

Every Saturday from June 18^th to August 27^th, starting at 8pm, the Little Italy Association and the Cinema Little Italy will be presenting Italian films with English subtitles. These showings all take place in the evening in the outdoor amphitheater, so bring a blanket or light jacket to stay warm. Admission of a $5 donation is appreciated. Movies being shown at this festival include Mia Madre, Torneranno I Prati, Io, Arelecchino, and Malavoglia. 

There will be an additional event occurring in Little Italy on August 6^th at 6pm. The Marine Band San Diego Summer Concert will be an evening of amazing live music by the 40-piece Marine Band, the Party Band, and the Jazz Band. Enjoy a night of live music before catching the Italian flick at 8, make it a night about the Arts!

Another event happening in Little Italy is the State of the Neighborhood Dinner, occurring Wednesday night from 5:30-8:30pm on July 27^th. Tickets are $45 to enjoy a rooftop dinner at the County Parking Structure with Little Italy dignitaries, business owners, and residents. Many restaurants in the Little Italy district will be donating Italian family-style dishes for the evening’s festivities.
