We’ve seen a lot of great advancements with electric cars in recent months, namely the 2015 BMW i3 BEV, and the 2015 Mercedes-Benz B Class Electric Drive. But perhaps the most promising new electric vehicle (and certainly one of the most impressive) is the luxurious and sporty Tesla Model S.
Tesla Model S breaks new ground in just about every category in the automotive arena. It’s unquestionably the safest car in America, offers the longest battery range of all the electric cars, and provides superior comfort, performance and functionality; with enough sexy cuts and curves to give even the Jaguar F Type a long, hard run for its money when it comes to looks.
Here are just a few of the highlights of Model S and its extraordinary features. But keep in mind that this fully automated machine is upgradable with periodic software updates, offering further advancements and improved functionality as the technology develops.
Electric Powertrain
Tesla Model S Electric Powertrain
The Model S powertrain has only one moving component—the rotor. This gives Model S silent, smooth and instantaneous acceleration, as well as the ability to go from zero to 60 in as little as 3.2 seconds. This is a vast improvement over gasoline engines that have hundreds of moving parts, more overall weight and slower off-the-line speeds.
Dual Motor All Wheel Drive
Tesla Model S Dual Motor AWD
Model S has two electric motors; one in the front and one in the rear. While conventional AWD cars sacrifice efficiency for all wheel traction (relying on bulky mechanical linkages to distribute power), Model S digitally controls all four wheels independently for flawless traction control in just about any weather conditions. It also makes for improved battery range and faster acceleration.
Autopilot
Tesla Model S Autopilot
Model S uses a combination of radar, 360 degree sonar sensors, and a forward facing camera to provide maximum safety and driving efficiency with minimal driver input. Model S changes lanes with a touch of the turn signal; constantly monitors traffic signals, other vehicles and pedestrians; and automatically follows the road’s bends and curves, adjusting its speed accordingly. When you arrive at your destination, Model S will locate a parking spot for you and automatically park itself. And in the event of an emergency situation, the car will safely bring itself to a stop.
Advanced Connectivity
Tesla Touchscreen
Model S has a highly intelligent computer system that’s loaded with functionality. It can check current traffic conditions to help you make your appointments on time; automatically adjust interior climate conditions; automatically open your garage door when you arrive home, or pull itself out of the garage and meet you at the curb when you’re on your way out. It knows to lower itself at highway speeds to reduce drag and extend battery range, and it’s equipped with user-friendly navigation to help you reach your destination quickly and safely.
Five Star Safety Rating
Tesla Safety Features
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives Model S a five star rating in all categories—this having much to do with the electric drivetrain, which is positioned below the occupant cell in its own sub frame. This lowers the car’s center of gravity, which improves handling and minimizes the chances of a rollover; and it replaces the heavy engine block with impact-absorbing steel rails. The sides of Model S are equipped with aluminum and steel rails to reduce side-impact, and will deploy 8 airbags to protect both front and rear passengers in the event of a crash. The battery will also disconnect from the main power source if an accident should occur.
Aside from these remarkable features, Model S is sleek, classy and very nice to look at; with the dynamics of any luxury sports car and a first-rate interior. It’s made with a variety of fine materials, from hand polished zinc to soft, beautifully conditioned Nappa leather; has an all-glass panoramic roof and a 17" touchscreen that controls most of the cars functionality and contains a digital instrument cluster.
Tesla Model S Interior
The Tesla Model S isn’t just the newest electric car to hit the streets with remarkable style and grace, it’s one of the most sought after cars today for its outstanding battery range and impeccable safety rating. It’s also the most accessible, with Tesla charging stations springing up all across the country. Just locate a charging station and Tesla will not only take you there, but will park itself in an open stall so you can charge up quickly and get back on the road. This truly is the electric car of the future.
