The Impact of Insufficient Sleep on Your Health

An average person will need eight hours of good quality sleep, but others will need more or less. What matters is that you can find out how many hours you need to sleep and then ensure you achieve it. Long-term sleep deficiency can negatively impact our physical health and emotional state. Continued work without enough sleep causes long-term and severe health complications.

There are many aspects of sleep that you must address. Right from simple things like the choice of blankets to creating a reliable sleep schedule, you must take your sleep or rest important. Here are the effects of insufficient sleep to your health.

Anxiety and depression

Long-term sleep deprivation has been associated with depression and a general loss of motivation. In contrast, those with depression usually have irregular sleep schedules. The hormone melatonin is responsible for both sleep cycles and mood regulations. People suffering from depression and those affected by insomnia are found to have lower levels of melatonin.

Heart attack and stroke

Sleep deprivation is a risk factor for cardiovascular issues such as stroke and heart attack. Researchers believe that sleep deficiency disrupts the brain parts which control and regulates the circulatory systems or causes inflammation, which results in blood clots more likely.

Appetite and obesity

Most probably, sleep deprivation, even in the short term can significantly affect your appetite, making you crave snacks that you may avoid and eating more than you should. Not only does sleep deprivation tend to stimulate appetite, but it also stimulates a craving for high carbohydrates and fat snacks.

Faults in normal brain functions

One unrestful night can make you experience mental fog, a short temper, lack of focus, and fatigue. If the brain fails to rest enough, mental faculties can drastically decrease. Adequate sleep is essential for you to concentrate, feel sharp, and learn. It also impacts your problem-solving skills, regulation of emotions, and the way you make decisions. If you don't get enough sleep, you will also have difficulties with motor skills, reflexes, and balance; most likely, you can injure yourself.

Hypertension

Sleeping less than five hours every night is associated with elevated instances of hypertension. Since enough sleep tends to help your body regulate stress hormones, sleep deprivation can amplify the impacts of stress on your body. Lack of sleep has been linked to a high rate of inflammation and increased blood pressure, and all this will put unnecessary strain on your heart.

Sleep deprivation can affect your judgment, especially about sleep.

Sleep deprivation can impact your interpretation of events. Consequently, this will affect your ability to make sound judgments since you may not be able to assess the situation wisely and act wisely.

People who lack enough sleep see themselves as prone to impaired judgment, especially when assessing what sleep deprivation is doing to them. It is surprising that the world we live in now, function on less sleep has become some badge of honor. Little did you know that if you think you are doing great on less sleep, you are entirely wrong.

Lack of enough sleep ages your skin

Studies show that you can experience puffy eyes and sallow skin after missing sleep for a few nights. But if the behavior turns chronic, it can cause fine lines, lackluster skin, and dark circles under your eyes. Your body releases more and more stress hormone cortisol if you don’t get enough sleep. When in excess amount, cortisol can break down skin collagen.

The effects mentioned above of sleep deprivation can be alarming. If you are deliberately missing enough sleep, you should understand the consequences of sleep deprivation, especially on your health and wellness.
