Napping is nothing to be ashamed of, boasting several benefits we can take advantage of as soon as we awaken. However, getting your nap time right is where the importance of understanding the benefits of napping for adults comes in. Whilst some elements of our sleep cycle we can control, such as using the best king size pillow, some we have little to no input over. With that in mind, we’re exploring the benefits of napping for adults and tips you can follow to enhance your night's sleep, below.
Greater Calmness
The frustrations of everyday life can easily get in the way, leaving us feeling frustrated, fatigued, and generally under the weather. Sometimes, we just need to take a nap to get away from it all and it’s nothing to be ashamed of but praised. We can all recognize when we start to get agitated and taking a nap gives your body the opportunity to restore that calmness, promoting relaxation. Though the problem may not be resolved when you wake up, you are likely to feel much more positive about the situation, helping you handle it better.
Better Mood
A lack of sleep can sometimes impact our mood, making us feel tired and irritated. However, taking a nap gives our bodies the opportunity to restore energy, leading us to experience positive emotions including happiness and calmness. This is because napping gives our bodies the chance to relax, helping you to recover from a possible lack of sleep.
Lower Fatigue
Sometimes our bodies feel more tired than others, prompting us to take a nap. Napping can of course reduce the feeling of fatigue, helping you wake up feeling energised. For the best outcome from your nap, aim to sleep for 15 to 30 minutes. Sleeping for any longer during the day may affect your ability to get a good night's sleep later on, which may even be the root cause of you taking a nap in the first place. Try not to nap too late in the day either as doing so may also have a negative effect on your sleep cycle.
Enhanced Performance
If you are finding it difficult to concentrate, it may be time to take a nap. Sleeping is known to enhance our performance, so just 20 minutes of rest during the afternoon may completely transform how you feel for the rest of the day. This is particularly true if you have previously had a bad night's sleep, as you are likely to find it more difficult to function optimally the next day. Ultimately, it’s important to listen to your body and what it needs to come back feeling stronger.
Higher Alertness
Taking a nap doesn’t just lead to enhanced performance but greater alertness too which is critical in some jobs or if you are driving, for example. This is because napping provides the body with the chance to renew itself, improving your brain function. Regular exercise can also support your alertness and make you feel more awake so instead of spending your lunchtime watching TV or catching up on social media, why not make the conscious effort to go on a brisk walk around the local area or taking the stairs, not the lift, back to your office.
