As a designer, my passion for modern aesthetics comes from blending contrasts, balancing materials, and giving each room a unique personality. I’ve discovered that turning a sleek space into something truly magical often comes down to the unexpected. That’s where color, texture, and the right mix of materials come in. 

I’m proud that my name, Hayley Servatius, has become synonymous with unlocking the magic of modern design. I’m referring to more than just a look — it’s about creating a feeling, a way to transform any room into something unforgettable.

The Art of Unexpected Pops of Color

Rooms that ease your mind while delivering unexpected touches feel truly extraordinary.

For me, that duality is achieved with the thoughtful use of color. A sleek palette can be appealing, but what really makes a space stand out is that unexpected pop of color — something adventurous and vibrant that grabs your attention and adds a layer of personality.

Many people think modern design is all about playing it safe with monochrome shades and neutral tones. While those elements create a strong foundation, I find that it’s the surprise of a bright orange pillow on a cream couch or a splash of vibrant artwork against a soft white wall that takes a room to the next level. 

This is the kind of detail that draws the eye, sparks curiosity, and gives the space its own voice.

A Balance of Materials: The Modern Trifecta

I’ve developed a kind of "recipe" for creating the perfect balance in modern spaces, and it always involves a combination of glass, wood, and stone.

Wood, with its warm and organic feel, brings a sense of coziness to any room. No matter how sleek or minimalist the design, wood adds that human touch, softening the edges and making the space feel more welcoming. 

I love using wood in unexpected ways, like a reclaimed wood coffee table in a clean, angular living room or exposed wooden beams against a crisp, white backdrop. The natural texture of wood gives the space an instant warmth that can’t be achieved with other materials.

On the other hand, glass is one of my go-to materials for introducing a sense of openness and light. Glass carries a sleek, contemporary elegance, reflecting light and creating an airy, open feel that transforms any room.

And then there’s stone — strong, timeless, and grounding. Stone connects the modern, streamlined look with the timeless beauty of nature, grounding the design and making it feel more substantial. 

Together, these three elements create a synergy that brings modern spaces to life.

Embracing Midcentury Influence in a Modern World

You can’t talk about modern design without mentioning the influence of midcentury style. 

The 1950s and ’60s were such an iconic time for design, with a focus on simplicity, function, and fearlessness. 

I often find myself drawing on the principles of that era, even in today’s projects. What I love about midcentury design is its playfulness. It reminds us that modern spaces don’t have to be serious. They can be fun, energetic, and deeply personal. 

In my work, I often add elements like geometric light fixtures, striking area rugs, or clean-lined furniture with a retro twist. 

This blend of midcentury influence with today’s materials, colors, and textures creates a rich, layered design that feels both nostalgic and current. 

Personalization: The Soul of Modern Design

Modern design, while sleek and minimal, doesn’t have to feel cold.

One of the most important elements in any project I work on is personalization. I truly believe every space should reflect the people who live in it. It’s this personal touch that takes a room from beautiful to meaningful.

Art plays a huge role in this. A single, striking painting or a carefully curated collection of sculptures can serve as the focal point of a room. 

I want the art in my designs to feel like a natural extension of the person’s style, something that sparks joy every time they see it.

Personalization also comes through in the little details like a quirky flea market find, a vintage family heirloom, or even a custom-made piece of furniture. 

The Power of Proportion and Space

I’ve learned that mastering the use of negative space is key to creating balance. 

It gives each element in the room a chance to shine, allowing the eye to rest and appreciate the beauty of the design. One of my favorite techniques is using oversized pieces strategically. A single, dramatic floor lamp or a large piece of art can make a statement without overwhelming the space. 

It’s about choosing less but making sure what you do choose packs a punch. Proportion is everything, and it can make or break a room.

Unlocking the magic of modern design lies in the artful blend of materials, color, texture, and personalization, creating a space that feels balanced, harmonious, and uniquely yours. 

In my work, I’ve discovered that the real magic happens when contrasts come together — where cool meets warm, sleek meets bold, and modern design gives a nod to the past.
