5 Unique Places To Visit In Spain

Barcelona, Spain

Every year hundreds of people, or rather should I say thousands of people, visit Spain. Many visit the popular places, which are spoken of frequently; Barcelona or Madrid. Purely because of the beauty each city provides. However there are other places in Spain that offer historical buildings and such, but also produce different customs of the Spanish lifestyle. Let's adventure through Spain with a sense of uniqueness. We will travel through the Spanish Islands, Seville, Cordoba, Granada, and Ronda, Spain. All have a presence of uniqueness that tourists typically don't know about.

You may have heard of the Spanish islands but knew nothing of them. I was the same way. However, as of today, these islands have made their way to my personal bucket list. While there are many islands in Spain, Tenerife, stands out to me. Its beauty from the mountaintop and the gorgeous pure blue water caught my eye. Tenerife is located off of West Africa and is the largest island in the Canary Islands. The island offers quite a bit of activities and if you have a love for golf, then you are set. This island has about eight golf courses, which can be played on year round. Most golf courses I know of here in the states close for part of the seasons. If you are a golfer looking to play year round, this island may be right up your alley. Aside from the courses, Tenerife is also home to the third highest volcano in the world. So, if you enjoy hiking this may be a perfect adventure for you.

With its views reminiscent of Sunset Cliffs here in San Diego, CA, El Hierro is a beauty as well. This island is also part of the Canary Islands and is one of the first islands producing 100% sustainability. El Hierro produces its own renewable energy. The internet is such a hot topic for individuals today, especially while traveling. However, don't worry; if you visit this island, you will be able to get in touch with everyone back home. El Hierro has free wifi throughout the island! So make sure you turn your electronic devices off if you want a peaceful getaway. But as this island is one of the smallest Canary Islands, it serves its purpose with its breathtaking views.

Next on our unique exploration is Seville, Spain. Seville, like many parts of Spain holds a historic time with it. This part of Spain houses numerous historic locations and while you may enjoy visiting museums and cathedrals, why not visit during Holy Week? Holy Week in Seville is a time that begins at the end of March and continues into the beginning of April where the people honor the last days of Christ’s life. It is a biblical week for those in the city, as you will see some in processions and some in long robes reacting scenes from the Bible.

Cordoba is home to one of the world’s oldest Islamic buildings. It is also home to a large Islamic population, or rather was the home to a large Islamic population thousands of years ago. If you stepped into the streets of Cordoba today, you could see that it is still centered on its olden times. While visiting Cordoba you can experience a meal in a historic building or wandering through old wine cellars. I am sure the wine is aged too. Aside from journeying through time, today Cordoba is looked at for its upcoming restaurants and bars.

Granada, Spain is known for its beautiful architecture. However, that is not the only thing Granada has to offer. If you enjoy architecture this city may be right for you. It offers an array of castles and the architecture is absolutely breathtaking. And just like every other city in Spain, you can enjoy tapas anywhere in the city.

Lastly we have Ronda, Spain. A city I had never really heard of but is quite unique as it sits on top of a mountain. And if you didn't know, Julius Cesar declared Ronda a city. And a city it was! It is also known to house one of the steepest gorges, El Tajo. If you are into bullfighting, than you have come to the right place. Ronda offers modern day bullfighting but is still the home to the bullfighting traditions of many, many, millenniums ago.

If you asked me now if I’d ever travel to Spain, I would tell you, "Absolutely! But mainly for the tapas!" My sights would not be to endure every architectural scene in Spain, but to endure every bar and restaurant Spain has to offer! I am a foodie at heart. However, I enjoy architecture as well. Scoping out different cities in which many tourists don't visit would be a treat. I would love to experience the Canary Islands and climb a volcano.
