Home remodeling projects take time and money, and you have limited amounts of both! Ready for your new minimalist-inspired kitchen with white marble countertops? Wait! Before you dive in head first, there are several essential steps to take into consideration.
To ensure your home remodel goes as smoothly as possible,Vesta Management in Blackfoot says it’s best to establish a detailed home remodel timeline and review your project’s max budget. You can hire someone to plan, design, and budget the project for you, which is known as full home remodeling services but if you want to save money, you can plan it yourself with the right guidance.
Follow this home remodel guideline/timeline example, and it will help you prepare for your project.
Average Home Remodel Timeline
Familiarize yourself with the remodeling process and what goes into it.
Home remodeling projects take 3 – 9 months to complete, but this all depends on the overall size of the project and who you hire to do the work and the amount of work you choose to do yourself. For every $75,000 spent, expect it to take six weeks to complete the task.
A rough outline of a typical home remodel timeline looks like:
- Planning: 4 – 6 weeks
- Demolition: 2 weeks
- HVAC, Electrical & Plumbing: 1 week
- Framing & Drywall: 2 weeks
- Painting: 1 week
- Cabinets & Fixtures: 1 week
- Doors & Windows: 1 week
- Clean House & Air Vents: 1 day
- Flooring: 1 week
- Trim and Finish Work: 1 week
What is the First Step?
First and foremost, you need to figure out your home remodel budget. Make a list of all the items in the remodel that are a must-have. For example, if you are remodeling your bathroom, maybe for you, a must-have is a vintage style tub. List all the must-haves. Then, do some research on each item and add those up. We recommend you put everything into a spreadsheet. Add about 25% on top of the cost of the items on your list for labor. (labor is hard to calculate so this is a ballpark figure.) Add another 20% for contingency issues. For example, if you open up the wall behind the old tub and find there is a pipe leaking, your 25% contingency budget will come in handy.
What can you do yourself and when must you hire a professional? Are you or someone in your family a handyman? If so there are a few things you can do by yourself, such as removing old mirrors and painting. However, when it comes to plumbing or electrical, you might want to leave that to a professional. Add this to your spreadsheet as well, this will help you nail down a budget for labor costs.
