Six essential tips to prepare for hurricane season

We all want to feel as safe as possible in our homes, and we can take many measures to protect ourselves against any potential threats from humans. However, protecting ourselves from Mother Nature can be a different story. Natural disasters can be a worry for many people in the US. People in Florida, Texas, and North Carolina have the biggest hurricane risk, so if you live there, you might want to take precautions against hurricanes.

A hurricane is a storm system with low pressure at the center with winds of up to 73 miles per hour. Many hurricanes over the years have caused enormous disruption in their midst.

Why preparing for hurricane season is important

Protecting your home against a hurricane is the best way to ensure your safety, property, and valuables. You can save time, money, and heartache by protecting yourself well against these storms. Even though we are often given fair warnings about hurricanes, making sure you’re prepared ahead of time can make you feel safer for the future.

Six ways to prepare for hurricane season

1. Clear your yard

One of the most important things to do is to make sure as little as possible can blow around and hit your home. This might mean taking any garden furniture indoors and any grills or BBQs.

If you have any gas canisters outside, these must be secured inside to ensure they don’t get blown about, as this can be a considerable hazard. If you can, disregard them entirely before the hurricane hits.

2. Cover your windows and doors.

Any part of your home that is fragile must be covered. Windows can be the first thing to get blown out by the storm, so ensure they’re reinforced with more substantial material. If you can get storm shutters, these are an excellent investment as they can be reused.

If you don’t have the time or funds to do this, nail pieces of plywood over your windows to reinforce them. Corrugated metal or plastic can also work well.

3. Invest in a hurricane-resistant hut.

Hurricane-resistant huts are an excellent investment as they can protect you and any valuables you have. These huts are made from corrugated steel, five times stronger than other buildings.

So, if you’re unable to evacuate your home in time or need to keep your belongings safe, a hurricane-resistant hut is your best solution. This is also a great solution if you have a car. It is well known that when you see hurricane coverage, you see destroyed vehicles everywhere. A hurricane-resistant hut will ensure enough space to store your car and help keep it safe in the storm.

4. Prepare to turn off your power.

If signs of flooding or you hear words of power lines falling, prepare to turn your power off. Make sure you are always well stocked with flashlights and candles so you can see. You can also buy some battery packs for your phone, so you’re not left without a way to contact people.

5. Fill water containers

Staying hydrated at all times is key, but this is especially important during a hurricane. A hurricane might impact water pipes, so ensuring you have enough drinking water ready to go is imperative.

6. Keep your first aid kit well-stocked

It’s always best to be prepared for any eventuality, so ensuring you have enough medicine, band-aids, and painkillers is essential. If you take medication regularly, make sure you’re never running low.

Pharmacies and hospitals can get busy during hurricane season, and you don’t want to be waiting around for your medication.

Preparing for a hurricane might seem scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Ensuring you’ve got everything you need will help keep your mind at ease, and it’s all about minimizing damage and keeping yourself and others safe.
