Hamlet in the Open Air: A Summer Shakespeare Delight

This summer, the Theatre School at North Coast Rep brings a beloved Shakespearean classic to life with a unique twist. The daring and timeless tragedy of *Hamlet* will be performed outdoors, offering a fresh and invigorating experience for theater enthusiasts. Directed by the talented Benjamin Cole, this production promises to captivate audiences with its blend of youthful energy and classical storytelling.

A Tale of Revenge and Madness

Hamlet in the Open Air: A Summer Shakespeare Delight

In *Hamlet*, the ghost of the King of Denmark reveals to his son, Hamlet, the dark truth about his murder. As Hamlet embarks on a quest to avenge his father's death, he grapples with feigned madness, existential musings, and a thirst for revenge. The tension mounts as Hamlet's uncle, now the king, schemes to eliminate him. The play culminates in a dramatic duel where nearly all the principal characters meet their tragic end.

Spotlight on Young Talent

Director Benjamin Cole is enthusiastic about the exceptional teen performers taking part in this outdoor summer production. Leading the charge is Kai Bunyak, who brings a fresh perspective to the role of Hamlet. Bunyak, a genderqueer teen, embraces the challenge and privilege of portraying this iconic character. “The character of Hamlet is such a universal challenge and privilege to portray. He has been played by countless individuals, across cultures, experience levels, and backgrounds, and as a genderqueer teen I am honored to step into that legacy,” says Bunyak.

A Unique Outdoor Experience

One of the most exciting aspects of this production is its outdoor setting. The performances will be held at three different venues: Birdwing Open Air Classroom in Del Mar, La Colonia Park in Solana Beach, and the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas. Each location provides a unique backdrop, enhancing the immersive experience of Shakespeare under the open sky. Audiences are encouraged to bring their own outdoor seating and blankets to fully enjoy the show.

The Essence of Live Shakespeare

Running a brisk 90 minutes with no intermission, this production aims to reignite appreciation for live Shakespeare performances. The outdoor venues, combined with the raw talent of the young cast, create an atmosphere that is both engaging and intimate. Assistant Director Steve Smith and Stage Manager Paul Smith, along with the rest of the production staff, have worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless and compelling performance.
