Sometimes, when you’re in the thick of your career, it can feel like you’ve hit a bit of a plateau and you’ve got no idea how to move forward - the idea of career growth might sound like a good option, but it can also often feel like something other people do, not you and that can mean you don’t look for opportunities (you don’t think there are any).
But career growth can be something anyone can do, and it’s often about learning new skills to make it happen. So how does it work? Keep reading to find out.

Keeping Up With Industry Changes
No matter what industry you’re in, things are always changing and updating, and whether it’s new technology, updated best practices, new trends, or anything else, staying ahead of the curve is key. Learning new skills helps you keep up with these changes and, in some cases, even get ahead of them altogether.
Imagine you’re in marketing, for example (and marketing is important in every industry) - just a couple of years ago, no one was talking about TikTok, but now it’s a huge platform for businesses to connect with their audience. So, if you learned how to market on TikTok, you’d have a big advantage over your competition, and that could make a big difference in your career. You can see that there’s a definite power in learning new things, and that’s just one example of many.
Opening New Doors
Learning a new skill can literally open up doors that might have been closed to you before, and if you’ve been feeling stuck in your current role, open doors might be exactly what you need. When you add new skills to your repertoire, that could mean you’re able to get a promotion, move to a new department, or even switch careers entirely and do something you always wanted to do. The thing is you just never know what opportunities could arise just because you know how to do something you didn’t know before.
An online degree, for example, can be a great way to learn something new without having to leave your current job or take too much time out from your family, so it’s an ideal option if you know you want to move on or to a new path but you can’t stop what you’re doing right now - it’s flexible, and that really counts.
Boosting Your Confidence
When you learn something new, it gives you a sense of accomplishment because you know you’ve taken steps to move forward and really improve yourself. That’s great for your confidence as well as giving you the opportunities you might have missed out on previously, as we mentioned above.
And why is being confident important? It’s important because it means you’re more likely to speak up in meetings and give your opinion, and you’ll take on new challenges, plus you’ll be happier to show people what you can do and where your skills lie, all of which means you can make a bigger impact at work, which should propel you onwards.
