With gum disease affecting a surprising amount of the country, Dr. Valentina Obradovic had to take action. The San Marcos dentist became certified in the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, a treatment that eliminates diseased gum tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact. In fact, Obradovic was one of the first to bring this modern and efficient method of treating gum disease to San Diego. In her effort to provide gum disease patients with a treatment that is less invasive than traditional gum surgery, Obradovic has seen tremendous results since performing the FDA-cleared procedure.
It is estimated that more than 75 percent of Americans have some form of gum disease, which in the beginning stages causes red, swollen gums that may bleed while brushing or flossing. It is important to brush and floss daily to prevent plaque buildup, which traps bacteria and causes these symptoms. Commonly known as gingivitis, gum disease can still be reversed in the beginning. But once it passes this stage, gum disease becomes periodontitis. At this point, the gums begin to form "pockets," deep hollow areas around the teeth that trap food, plaque, and bacteria. The gums start to recede and form gaps between the teeth. In advanced stages, teeth are loose and begin shifting.
Aside from the obvious dangers of losing teeth and eventually the jaw structure, neglecting treatment for periodontal disease can lead to larger health risks such as heart disease and diabetes. Since there are millions of germs in the human mouth, gum disease leaves open wounds in the gums that allow bacteria to enter directly into the bloodstream and circulate through the body. To avoid major health risks, it is important to seek periodontal disease treatment.

That’s where the laser surgery comes in. Obradovic begins the procedure with a probe to determine the depth of the gum pockets. Using the patented PerioLase® MVP-7, she is able to kill the bacteria in the gum pockets and selectively remove any diseased gum tissue. The laser is designed to leave healthy tissue intact, so it does not damage unnecessary tissue. It then stimulates the remaining healthy tissue to reattach to the root of the tooth and causes the bone to begin growing again.
The procedure is considered to be minimally invasive, and sutures are not necessary, which helps to speed up the healing process. Most patients report little discomfort or pain and a quick recovery time.
Treating gum disease is much easier when it is in the early stages, so it is important to recognize symptoms and seek immediate treatment. Obradovic consults with patients on an individual basis to determine whether they are good candidates for this procedure.
Obradovic graduated from the University of Belgrade dental school, one of the best in the country. A dentist for more than 20 years, she has been through several postgraduate courses in various fields of dentistry and is part of one percent of dental professionals providing the most recent FDA-cleared laser procedure for gum disease and periodontal treatment.
