Review: Airstream Luxurious Travel Trailer

Airstream's interior

As summer is fast approaching, beckoning the calls of the great outdoors throughout the west, families and outdoor enthusiasts will begin making travel plans for their next adventure in nature’s wildlife. Airstream, the ever-iconic silver trailer, takes part in this time-honored tradition annually, bringing luxurious travel to the outdoors, with all the amenities and comforts of home, enjoying the spirit of adventure with a sense of leisure and style.

From the time Wally Byam decided to build a platform base, placing a tent as shelter on his Model T Ford Chassis with an icebox and kerosene stove, his invention propelled Airstream as one of the first modern trailers of its time in the early 1930s, solidifying the brand as one of the oldest and most recognizable vehicles in the United States for its innovation, creativity and refined evolution.

In sustaining its past, by preserving the exterior of its light-weight and fuel efficient aluminum silver shell known as the "silver bullet," Airstream continues to re-discover innovative ways to define contemporary design elements for the sophisticated camper. Though misleading at times in maintaining its silver shell, Airstream’s President and Chief Executive, Bob Wheeler, commented, "If I had a nickel for every time someone said to me ‘Airstream trailers [still exist]… and they still make those things?’ I’d be rich." Further adding to the misconception, "Especially, [as] many people don’t realize how progressive we are in our designs and how relevant we are for today’s lifestyles."

Renowned architect and designer Christopher Deam approached Airstream and made a proposal to revolutionize the trailer’s interiors. It was a perfect marriage of the two, utilizing conventional structure with modern elements of clean, simplistic, contemporary designs. The end result: providing consumers the options to customize the interior design of their Airstream trailer.

Interiors also feature stainless steel appliances with chrome detailing, along with natural and mahogany laminates as options for flooring and cabinetry. And, with accolades of creative distinction for Deam’s visionary work, his evocative and forward-thinking pieces from his personal gallery are permanent collections showcased at San Francisco’s Museum of Contemporary Modern Art. It is no wonder that Deam’s work with Airstream is considered a work of art; receiving a "Good Design Award" and "International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) Editor’s Award" for his interior designs.

Some of the Airstream luxurious travel trailers include:

International Serenity: This series takes it a step further captivating the more refined tasteful emergence of ‘East meets West’, affording premium laminates, textured countertops, bamboo-inspired flooring, and accents incorporating lemongrass rice paper; one will feel the Zen-like, Asian-inspired calming spirit once entering this model trailer.

In addition, Airstream offers travelers the recent debut of their luxurious touring coaches; more like high-end van-styled motor coaches known as the Avenue and the Mercedes-Benz Interstate edition. They have also introduced Chris Deam’s collection of a fashion-forward prototype, the Sterling Concept; it was featured earlier this year at Modernism Week at the Desert Fashion Plaza in Palm Springs, pushing the creative boundaries of interior design with unique features like sweeping aluminum surfaces and yellow floors, complemented by white ultra-chic leather upholstery.

The Airstream brand of recreational vehicles stands true to the traditions of Byam’s credo: re-discovering ways to be inventive, and cutting-edge for travelers to lavish in the whimsical spirit of the outdoors, making each trip an undeniable experience of luxury and comfort. And in his own words: "To keep alive and make real an enduring promise of high adventure and faraway lands, of re-discovering old places and new interests. To strive endlessly to stir the venturesome spirit that moves you to follow a rainbow to its end, and thus makes your travel dreams come true."
