Woman telling you to Follow Successful Post-Tattoo Healing

So you've got a new tattoo? Congratulations! The tattoo numbing cream definitely made the session easier to handle. And now you have a beautiful piece that gives onlookers insight into who you are. However, most people only see the finished product—what about in the in-between stages?

While you may be ready to show off you new ink, it must heal properly. Although tattoo numbing cream helped initially, you don't need it again unless you plan on getting another tattoo soon. Instead, you'll need to focus on your current tattoo's healing process. Follow the steps below to ensure it heals flawlessly.

1. Don't Mess With the Bandage

After getting your new ink, the tattoo artist will clean the area, apply ointment, and wrap it with a bandage. Usually, they'll tell you to leave it on for a specific period. Of course, you'll be excited to see your new tattoo, but you need to resist the urge to remove the covering.

Since the area is like a fresh wound, the bandage protects it from dirt and other bacteria. But be sure to follow your tattoo artist's directions adequately. Leaving the application on too long could cause the ink to bleed and other discomforts.

2. Remove the Bandage

Once the recommended time has passed, wash your hands and remove the bandage carefully. The area will be slightly irritated, and you'll see fluid coming from your tattoo. Don't be alarmed; this is a normal part of the tattoo healing process and should last about a week. If the redness and oozing don't subside, you may have to visit your healthcare provider.

Be gentle when removing the bandage from your new tattoo. Removing it too fast can damage the ink. Apply warm water to get the dressing to get it off more easily. Once it's off, throw it away; using it again can cause discomfort around your new ink. Also, applying tattoo numbing cream to a fresh piece isn't recommended because it doesn't help with the healing process.

3. Clean the Area

The next step is cleaning your tattoo. It's a straightforward process, and you'll need to ensure your hands are clean. Instead of running it under lukewarm water, use your hands to scoop water over the area. If the tattoo is on one of your arms, then use one hand to complete this task.

Once it's wet, grab unscented antibacterial soap and rub it over the area using your fingers. Doing this helps remove excess blood and ink from your new tattoo. It also prevents your tattoo from scabbing too soon. Don't use tattoo numbing cream or washcloths when cleaning your fresh piece. The numbing cream is a preventative measure before you get your tattoo; washcloths can carry bacteria that could be harmful to your new ink.

4. Let It Dry

After a thorough wash, it's time to dry your tattoo. Don't use a tool such as a hair dryer because the harsh heat won't feel the best on your new ink. Instead, blot your tattoo with a clean paper towel or let it air dry.

Avoid rubbing it with a paper towel so your skin doesn't become irritated. Don't use a regular towel to dry it because it can carry bacteria. Also, the fluff could get stuck in your tattoo, which could be challenging to remove

5. Moisturizing Time

Once your tattoo is completely dry, it's time to moisturize it. This is an essential step in the healing process because as the days pass, you'll notice your tattoo will start scabbing and cause itchiness. Moisturizing it can help limit that irritation.

Your tattoo artist will recommend the cream you should use for your new tattoo. Apply a thin layer and rub it in until your skin absorbs it. Try not to use products like Vaseline because they're thicker and will make it more challenging for your skin to absorb. Once you apply the moisturizer, don't rewrap your tattoo because it could hinder the healing process.

6. Protect Your Tattoo Over the Next Few Weeks

As your tattoo starts healing, you'll be anxious to return to your everyday routine. But there are a few things you should keep in mind. For example, you'll need to clean and moisturize your new piece at least three times a day.

You'll also need to avoid direct sunlight, so it doesn't cause your tattoo to fade. Patience is necessary if you love swimming because pool and ocean water can cause tattoo discomfort. So be mindful of certain activities each day.

Here's How to Have a Flawlessly Healed Tattoo

A lot goes into caring for a new tattoo, and you'll need a lot of patience throughout the process. However, it's to ensure your tattoo heals correctly. Follow the tips above, and you can show off your perfectly healed tattoo in no time.
