THE OLD GLOBE
Under the stars and currently running through July 27 at The Old Globe’s Lowell Davis Festival Theatre, is one of William Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, ‘Othello’. Making his debut on the outdoor stage, Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein, leads a superb cast that includes two time Golden Globe nominee and Grammy Award winner Blair Underwood ("Ironside," "Sex and the City"); Emmy Award winner Richard Thomas ("The Waltons," "The Americans"); and Kristen Connolly ("House of Cards"). Othello, the brilliant general who excels both on the battlefield and in the halls of state, marries the beautiful Desdemona. This marriage drives his Lieutenant Iago mad with envy. Edelstein delivers a stunningly intense and intimate production, one that should not be missed during this Old Globe season.
Richard Thomas stars as Iago, Kristen Connolly as Desdemona, and Blair Underwood as Othello in Shakespeare’s Othello, directed by Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein.
INTERNATIONAL SUMMER ORGAN FESTIVAL
Just across the Prado from the Old Globe is The International Summer Organ Festival. This summer series runs each Monday evening at 7:30p.m. through August 25 and features the Spreckels Organ, the nation’s largest outdoor pipe organ. This joint venture between the Spreckels Organ Society and The City of San Diego, brings together internationally-known organists and guest artists for one of the city’s best loved summer events.
SUMMER POPS
Down on the waterfront, the San Diego Symphony’s annual outdoor Summer Pops concert series is already underway. Located right behind the Convention Center, in the Embarcadero Marina Park, the Summer Pops offers a wide range of concerts through Labor Day weekend. In a special Thursday night concert on July 24, ‘Video Games Live’ returns after a five year absence—giving a full symphonic treatment to popular gaming music themes. Add a synchronized light show and these games really come to life. On Friday July 25, the music of Danny Elfman, from his collaboration with film director Tim Burton, will be presented with original sketches and clips on the big screen. It’s sure to be one of the most unique concert experiences of the summer.
