If your talents lie in creative pursuits like art, dancing, music, and acting, you’re something of a rare breed. There aren’t many people who succeed in these fields, but if you have the raw ability to back you up, you’re off to a great head start.
That said, no one needs to tell you that it isn’t easy. Creative roles are one of the most competitive types of jobs around, and alongside your talent, you’ll also need a great deal of mental fortitude.
In this article, you’ll learn four things you should know about ‘making it’ in a creative field!

1. The Importance of Networking
As they say, it’s often more about who you know than what you know, and that sentiment couldn’t be more true when it comes to creative fields.
Of course, that doesn’t mean to say you should be building relationships for the sole purpose of getting what you want, because that’s inorganic, and people will see right through it. Instead, throw yourself into relevant social settings like meetups, casting days, and parties, and have fun; you’ll gravitate towards the right people, and you’ll build plenty of life-long connections simply by being yourself.
2. Consider Travelling
With creative work, it’s rarely the case that you’ll find what you’re looking for in your home town. Most jobs are in the big cities, so you may want to consider travelling somewhere else to follow your passions, and this might even mean going to another country.
For creatives, there’s the option of the O-1 visa, which has been created especially for people deemed to have extraordinary ability or achievement. If you’ve received any major recognition for your talents, this can be a great option to pursue.
3. Thinking With Your Business Head On
Many creatives hate thinking about merging business with their art, which makes a lot of sense. Those two areas of life can seem very different, and you may feel the cold, hard, capitalist notion of self-promotion and climbing the ladder to be at odds with your passions.
Nevertheless, in this instance, you are your own business, and if you want to be successful, it’s important to start thinking that way.
Beyond your solo pursuits, consider whether there’s anything you can use your talents for to support yourself while you get there. For example, if you’re a musician, you could teach your instrument, or if you’re an actor or actress, you could decide to run a workshop.
4. Be Consistent
And finally, above all else, consistency is key. The people who succeed in these fields often aren’t even the most talented – they’re the ones who have drive. Even on days where you’re not feeling it and just want to roll over and go back to sleep, it’s essential to force yourself through it.
You can take days off, of course, for your physical and mental health, but for the most part, you need to be consistently putting yourself out there and making the effort each and every day.
Hopefully, the points above have motivated you to get started. It’s a tough world out there, but with enough tenacity, you can make it!
