I’m beyond excited to launch my new interview series, Closet Conversation—where style meets story. I’ll be sitting down with some of the best-dressed people in San Diego to talk all things fashion: personal style, closet staples, shopping secrets, and the inspirations behind their standout looks. We’re kicking things off with none other than the fabulous Nicole Papale—a woman whose style speaks volumes. Chic, effortless, and always authentic.

(Dean Hall) How would you describe your personal style in three words?

(Nicole Papale) Socal Street Glamour or Beachy Street Glamour

(DH) What’s your go-to outfit when you want to feel powerful and confident?

(NP) I love to wear anything that makes me feel sexy. It could be a dress that shows my curves, paired with heels and a little shoulder bag.

(DH) Is there a signature piece or accessory that defines your style?

(NP) I wear a gold serpentini necklace my jeweler made inspired by BLVGARI jewelry. It’s edgy and makes me feel like I’m modern day Cleopatra. It’s a piece that has just the right mix of elements gold and diamonds.  She mixes well with my graphic tee days running around as a mom, to my painting the town red evenings dancing the night away

(DH) Who are your biggest style influences—past or present?

(NP) My fashion icons are Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian and Marilyn Monroe. They all embody sexiness and power.

(DH) Do you have a favorite fashion era that inspires your wardrobe?

(NP) I love Y2K fashion which has made a huge comeback and I’m here for it. The metallics, mini skirts, cargo pants, band tees, crop tops and chokers were all what I wore then and wear now. My closet is filled with these items. In 2025 the trend feels slightly sexier. Or maybe it’s how I look at the world now with more confidence. The younger generations keep this old trend looking fresh too. As a busy mom, my cargo pants help me keep my phone nearby too.

(DH) If you could swap closets with any fashion icon, living or dead, who would it be? Jennifer Lopez. She rocks all styles perfectly. Her red carpet looks and street-wear style have always been spot on. Her style is so chic and show stopping. I’d wear her dance clothes she wears on stage to my kids soccer games.

Wardrobe & Styling Secrets

(DH) What’s the most treasured item in your closet, and what’s the story behind it?

(NP) My most treasured item is the first large Chanel classic flap bag. It’s a great day or evening bag. The lining inside is a deep purple with a gold hardware chain. My husband bought it for me for Christmas 10 years ago. It’s an elegant staple piece that goes with so many different styles. The Chanel bags have increased in value too so I love it even more.

(DH) What’s one unexpected styling trick that always elevates a look?

(NP) My jackets. I love wearing jackets. I own long, short, puffy, thin, denim, metallic, satin, etc… I wear them year-round. My jackets have their own closet. They’re like my little sidekick. They’ve been on the dance floor with me, bon eaches, boats, ski trips, weddings, small and big parties. They’re sexy, useful, and practical. And each jacket has a story about where I bought it. I guess they are sentimental to me as well.

(DH) How does your daily lifestyle influence your fashion choices?

(NP) During the week, I’m very casual.  Being a busy mom to a family of 5 inspires my daily fits. I’d love to walk out in high-fashion pieces all day, but the truth is I wear a lot of jeans. My go to brand is Citizens of Humanity. I love the Jean textile they use. I can’t wear heavy jeans or ones I can’t run around in. I usually pair them with a Graphic-t or a Skims body suit. Depending on the weather. And of course paired with a jacket.

(DH) Do you believe fashion should be more about self-expression or functionality, or can it be both?

(NP) It can be both. I do think you need to wear what you’re comfortable in, or you won’t feel confident. If you second-guess it, don't wear it. We’re so critical of ourselves why complicate it with a look that doesn’t feel you. I’ve done it and I’ll admit I self sabotage. Sometimes it’s nice to step out of your comfort zone, but it’s always best to wear what you feel your best self in.

(DH) What’s one fashion rule you love to break?

(NP) That high waisted jeans aren’t out.

(DH) How do you approach shopping—are you a planner or an impulse buyer?

(NP) I’m an impulse buyer. I tend to buy on the side of retail therapy tbh.

(DH) What role does sustainability play in your fashion choices?

(NP) It both directly and indirectly impacts my purchases. Sustainable fashion brands use better eco-friendly materials that are more appealing. I like to buy pieces that have longevity. Brands that disclose their sustainability efforts help my buying decisions.

(DH) If you had to live with only five fashion essentials, what would they be?

(NP) They would be jackets, cool tennis shoes, gold hoops, bodysuits and jeans.
