5 Ways to Give Your Mental Health a Boost

Every day it feels like the news is drawing upon some new horror to spotlight, and very quickly can we fall into repetitive thoughts of dismay, fear, and even despair. We can, however, reclaim our sense of peace and carve out a new reality for ourselves that is hopeful.

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, even if it is less discussed. Here are some ways to ensure a sound mind, a happy heart, and lasting self-confidence.

Unplug

It is so easy to get wrapped up in every minute internet happening these days, especially as we are more confined to our homes than usual and have a newly developed cultural need to “know everything going on.” This is, however, an illusion, and we aren’t missing much of anything by cutting down on the time we spend online.

By setting rules, like going on the internet one or two hours less than you normally do and gradually working to only spend maybe a few hours a day on it, you can regain agency over your own time and how you choose to spend it.

Adopt a Pet

Since the beginning of civilization, humans have domesticated animals in the hopes of additional help in hunting or farming—but by now, we know that they also serve as profound emotional companions. Especially for those living alone, having a creature to take care of and be responsible for can provide a deep sense of stability and attachment.

Additionally, if you choose to register your service dog, your animal will have benefits other pets don’t, such as being able to come on flights with you, go into restaurants with you, and never leave your side so long as you need them. This gives a huge boost in confidence and companionship for people who suffer from anxiety or other mental health issues.

Get Some Exercise

Getting outside and exercising are some of the most primal needs of humanity, and it’s no wonder why. Studies show that being in the sun at least fifteen minutes a day with no sunscreen or UV protection is essential to our biochemistry, and by extension, mental health.

Exercising also releases endorphins which are integral to our bodily makeup. Endorphins alleviate stress and pain, as well as make us happier almost to the point of euphoria. Going outside and raising your heart rate can be an extremely gratifying and quick way to assuage any mental discomfort.

Meditate

Meditation is a fine art that has existed for centuries in human history. It is a gradual process of reducing overthinking, controlling mental traffic, and expanding consciousness. It is not the quickest solution as it is one of dedication and patience, but practitioners have praised this exercise as a life-changing endeavor.

Plenty of classes, websites, and apps exist to guide newcomers to the journey of meditation, and it is an ideal long-term solution to any mental or emotional plight.

Seek Medical Assistance

So far we have discussed at-home options, but sometimes that’s not enough. If you still find yourself struggling with your mental health, consider reaching out to a doctor. Not every problem can be solved with exercise and meditation, and it never hurts to ask others for help.

Even for those without health insurance, there are still online options or options within your own community to treating mental health with medicine once you decide you need to seek it out.

Last Thoughts

There are plenty of ways to improve your mental health, but these are a good place to start. Whether you choose to meditate, take up an instrument, reduce your screen time, all three or something else entirely, just remember what lay at the end of it—a quieter world and a gentler way of taking care of yourself.
