When it comes to home maintenance, there are two vital aspects to consider. The first one is prolonging the useful life of your house. The second is making life easier and more convenient for you and your loved ones.
With that in mind, let us look at three essential tips on how to do this.
Making Payments on Time
You cannot maintain a home if you do not have one. As obvious as this might sound, many people fail to recognize the importance of making house payments on time. Aside from unwanted interest meaning more money, being late on your expenses can lead to the bank taking your house away from you if you have a mortgage or a utility company cutting off one of its services.
As such, it is essential to have an exact schedule for when payments are due. Whether it is on a piece of paper stuck to your fridge or a spreadsheet on your computer, make sure it is in a place you remember and can easily access.
And don't forget to include all necessary information. This will make everything easier to understand. For example, if you have insurance for a regular or mobile home, you should note the last payment date, the total amount you have paid so far, the next payment date, and the total amount remaining for the entire policy.
The same goes for mortgage loans, utility bills, and so on. The more detail you keep, the easier it will be to stay up to date and the more headaches you will avoid.
The Exteriors
When it comes to exterior home maintenance, there are plenty of things you can look into. Some of the most common ones include:
- Making sure the vegetation in your garden or patio is well-kept. It isn't about vanity. It's about increasing your home's curb appeal and saving you time and effort on future work.
- Painting. Nothing makes a house look cheaper than blotchy spots on the outside walls, main door, or roof. Once again, it is not only about looks. Paint can also serve as a sealant to protect your house from damage caused by moisture over time.
- They are fixing the windows. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then perhaps the windows are the soul to the house. As such, keep them clean and well-maintained. Check regularly whether the frames are well-attached, the windows themselves open and close quickly, and there are no cracks.
- Making sure the door is clean and well-kept. Replacing your main door is something few will consider. Still, you might have to do it if you don't take care of it well. Regular maintenance includes outside and inside cleaning, checking the door's hardware components, and testing locks and door operability.
These are some of the essential exterior checks you can do to confirm the outside of your house is the way it should be.
The Interiors
Interior home maintenance starts with daily sweeping, wiping, and washing of clothes. Of course, most of us are very busy at least five days a week, and thorough cleaning is impossible to do. Even so, as they say, prevention is the best cure. Instead of cleaning once a week for hours, it is faster and much more efficient to do it daily.
It doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of time. Instead, it is about applying the concept of "clean as you go." If you see some dust on the floor or a bit of extra food in the kitchen, why not pick it up right away? It doesn't take very long to do, and it guarantees your home will always be in optimum condition.
Japan is arguably the cleanest country in the world. Even though it is a small island with over 120 million people, it somehow stays pristine. The main reason for this is a conscious effort by all citizens to the interior and exterior maintenance.
Aside from sweeping dirty floors and wiping whenever there is dust around, there are many other things you can do. Among others, you can check the filters in your air conditioning systems once or twice a month, replace extension cords that appear to be faulty or worn-down, and change the batteries in all your devices.
As we have seen, there are three critical ways to do adequate maintenance on your home. These are taking care of all payments on a timely basis and taking care of both exteriors and interiors.
By doing them, you will prevent things from going wrong and accidents from happening, and your house will be yours to enjoy for many years to come.
