Say goodbye to winter and hello to spring! With the beginnings of warm, sunny days upon us, it’s time to brush off the last remains of winter from our homes.
Winter tends to put our houses through the wringer, between the snow and ice and various cycles of thawing, freezing and melting. There’s no better time to do some maintenance around the house than spring. You can get those issues caused by winter fixed up before they become major problems and be able to relax and enjoy the spring and summer.
So before you dust off the patio furniture and pull out the barbecue, follow these tips for spring home maintenance.
Inspect Your Roof
The winter weather can cause roof shingles to become damaged or missing. Use binoculars to check for missing shingles or signs of visible damage from the ground. Contact a roof repair company as soon as possible if you see any. Roof issues can quickly spiral out of control, leading to more extensive repairs down the line.
Additionally, as the agents at Shawn Lepp Group know, the roof is an important feature of a home. If it’s in bad condition, you could lose potential buyers or see a drastic reduction in the offers you get. For both of these reasons, take the time to fix your roof now.
Caulk and Inspect Windows
The gaps around your windows can lead to water and bugs getting into your home and air leaks and drafts, making your home uncomfortable.
Inspect the caulking around your windows, scrape off old caulking and replace it as needed. While you’re at it, check to make sure your window structure is in good condition, with no decaying wood.
Furthermore, if you notice major issues, replacing a window may be necessary to ensure proper functionality. This will help maintain a comfortable indoor environment and improve energy efficiency.
Fix Up Cracks
Any walkways and your driveways can be susceptible to cracks. In addition to being an eyesore, they can cause leaks and floods in your home. Remove any weeds growing out of them and fill the cracks to avoid spring rain from seeping into your house.
Clean and Check Downspouts and Gutters
Making sure your gutters and downspouts are in good condition is an essential fall maintenance task to ensure no leaves are clogging them up. However, it’s a good idea to do this twice a year.
Cleaning these out in the spring also allows you to get those last fall leaves that may have collected cleaned out, and you can also make sure they are in good condition after months of snow and ice. Ensure water flows freely through them and doesn’t end up pooling around your foundation.
Examine Your Attic
Inspect your attic to ensure melting snow hasn’t leaked in and no birds or rodents have made their home there for the winter. Check vents and roof flashing and make sure there are no wet spots or molding in your insulation.
Follow these tips to get your home in good working order so you can enjoy all the spring has to offer.
