How Self Storage Can Help You Maximize Space At Home

If you have ever found yourself struggling to find space for your belongings at home, you’re not alone. Many people today are facing the issue of limited storage space in their homes, which can lead to cluttered living spaces and stress. One simple way to solve this issue is to rent a self storage unit to safely keep those belongings that you don’t need on a daily basis. According to a recent survey done by StorageCafe, a nationwide self storage marketplace, about 21% of Americans are currently using self storage, while an additional 15% are planning to rent a unit in the future.

Self storage can be a huge help if you’re moving, downsizing or renovating your home. In such instances, you can store some or all of your belongings in a storage unit for a couple of months or even long-term. Many people who are downsizing to a smaller home find it convenient to put items in storage long-term. This way, they can save treasured items and still have a neat and tidy home.

However, those who recently switched to smaller abodes are not the only ones who can benefit from renting self storage long-term. A lot of Americans could use a self storage unit to keep some of their belongings — in fact, 40% of those who use self storage resort to it due to not having enough space at home. Here’s how self storage can help you maximize your space at home so that all your wants and needs are met:

1. Carve out space for your home office or hobbies

Having your own home office or a dedicated space for your hobbies might sound like a distant dream for many. However, it’s actually quite attainable with a little bit of reorganizing. Maybe you have a basement that you use for storage. A much better use of space would be to move those belongings into a self storage unit and remodel your basement for better use — as a home office, hobby room or even a home gym. Don’t have a basement? You can reorganize your living room by placing some of the furniture pieces you use least into storage and dedicating the newly obtained floor space to something more suitable for your current lifestyle.

2. Reclaim your garage

This is a frequently occurring scenario: The garage is filled with all sorts of tools and equipment that you use maybe a few times a year, so much so that you don’t have space for your car, and you’re keeping it in the driveway. Or maybe your family owns two cars, but only one of them is used regularly. In such situations, moving the items and vehicles you don’t need on a daily basis into a storage unit will allow you to comfortably use your garage and maximize its potential for you.

3. Enjoy perfectly organized closets

From out-of-season clothing and baby items to sports equipment or bedding, our closets must hold a lot of items. And with closet space at a premium in most homes, keeping them tidy is a true challenge. Many of us have a hard time finding things in our closets because there’s just too much stuff in there.

Fortunately, you can move a good portion of it into self storage. Some of the best candidates for relocation into a self storage unit are the things you are unlikely to need at a moment’s notice such as baby clothing and accessories that you are holding on to for future use, seasonal clothing, or sports equipment. You can even rotate sports equipment based on the season: take your winter ski suits to storage in the spring and pick up your camping gear and other warm-weather sports equipment on your way out. This way, you will always have what you need on hand, but without the clutter. Other items that can be kept in storage (with no inconvenience to you) are large suitcases and formal attire.

4. Store your extra furniture, decorations, and other items

Maybe you inherited some nice furniture that doesn’t fit in your current space, or maybe you’re an avid antique shopper always on the hunt for beautiful pieces for your dream home. However, you don’t have to resort to keeping large furniture or decorations you plan on using years from now in your current living space. Not only will it make you feel cramped and overwhelmed by possessions, but you actually risk damaging the more fragile items. Instead, rent a climate-controlled self storage unit where everything will be well protected until you’re ready to use it.

5. Hold on to your memorabilia and collectibles, but not to clutter!

From comic books and coins to vinyl records, old sports trophies and more, many of us love collecting things — and we definitely get attached to them. It’s not uncommon for collectors to have hundreds, if not thousands, of their favorite collectibles. This doesn’t bode well in a busy home where everyone needs to be able to do their thing, from working and studying to playing, cooking, relaxing and so on. If you’re a collector, consider renting a small storage unit to keep your precious possessions. It will make your life at home a lot less cluttered (and you’ll even be able to expand your collection!).

Self storage can help you in many aspects of your life. Find a storage unit located close to your home for ease and convenience, and to improve the way you’re using your space at home.
