Whether you’re invested in the jockeys and their steadfast steeds or simply eager to make an impression in your most daring chapeau, Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack is the place to be. Each season, the stakes grow higher and anticipation crackles in the air as spectators follow the riders, awaiting the thrill of the finish and the crowning of champions. But the attention isn’t only on the track — couture fashion draws people in, each eager to showcase their own stylish flair. It doesn’t matter what brings you there, as long as you savor the pageantry and excitement of the day.
This year, Opening Day lands on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the stunning Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. Anchored in tradition since the 1930s and visited by luminaries over the years, Del Mar is a storied venue with quintessential beauty. Nestled in the Del Mar Fairgrounds, its seaside panoramas and classic architecture make it more than a racetrack — it’s a landmark.
A Day of Horses, Hearts & Hats
Del Mar Racetrack
If you arrive ready to witness the equestrian drama unfold, you won’t be disappointed. From the moment gates open to the final post, there’s a magnetic energy—jockeys pushing, horses surging, dreams realized and stung. There’s nothing quite like relaxing in the shade, sipping something cool, and being immersed in the theatre of it all.
But Opening Day is equally about seeing and being seen. It’s one of the most awaited social events in San Diego, and fashion is as much a spectator sport as the races. Among the accessories that dominate are extravagant hats and elevated Turf Club attire — so much so that the Hat Contest itself is legendary.
This year’s Opening Day Hats Contest takes place in the Plaza de Mexico. You can enter between 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Categories include Most Glamorous, Best Fascinator, Best Flowers, Best Racing Theme / All Others, and there’s more than $5,000 in cash and prizes to be won. The grand prize often includes luxury getaways and fine dining packages. Safe to say, bigger really is better when it comes to these head-turning creations.
Beyond the Track: “The Party” & After Parties
For those seeking to extend the celebration beyond the races, Del Mar offers “The Party.” This exclusive experience includes admission plus access to DJs, craft beer and cocktail bars, photo booths, and private wagering. It’s 21 & up only, tickets are $105 in 2025, and the event often sells out fast.
Additionally, after-party events stir further excitement. One highlight is the Opening Day After Party at L’Auberge Del Mar, running from 5:00 p.m. until midnight — think ocean views, handcrafted cocktails, and live music that keep the glamour going long after the horses have run.

Why It Still Captivates
Del Mar remains a San Diego summer institution — it’s where elegance meets adrenaline. In 2025, it kicks off its 86th summer season, continuing a legacy since 1937. The season’s marquee event, the Pacific Classic, once again draws top-tier horses, prize money, and global buzz.
Opening Day isn’t just the start of the races. It’s a celebration of style, spectacle, community — and, of course, the equine drama that keeps it all alive.
