From rooftop lounging and classic steakhouse dining to thoughtful hotel packages, this downtown landmark offers a distinctive alternative to the Las Vegas Strip.

Las Vegas has never been particularly interested in standing still. Hotels reinvent themselves, restaurants arrive with considerable fanfare, and entire neighborhoods evolve around the city's appetite for entertainment. Yet some of its most memorable destinations are those that preserve a little of the past while finding new ways to appeal to today's travelers.
The Plaza Hotel & Casino is one of them.
Standing at the western entrance to the Fremont Street Experience, the Plaza combines vintage Las Vegas character with modern guestrooms, rooftop recreation, destination dining and a setting that places visitors in the center of downtown's entertainment district.
It isn't trying to be another sprawling resort on the Strip. Its appeal lies in something different: history, personality and the convenience of having much of downtown Las Vegas within easy reach.
A Las Vegas Landmark With a Story to Tell
The Plaza opened in 1971 on the site of the city's original railroad depot at 1 Main Street. Originally known as the Union Plaza, the property helped define a new era for downtown Las Vegas.
More than five decades later, its location remains one of its greatest assets.
Step outside, and the Fremont Street Experience is directly ahead, with its illuminated canopy, live entertainment and lively collection of restaurants and bars. The surrounding neighborhood offers access to historic casinos, contemporary cocktail lounges and attractions that reveal another side of the city.
While Las Vegas Boulevard receives much of the international attention, downtown offers a more concentrated experience of the city's history.
The Plaza has embraced that identity while introducing renovations and new amenities intended to keep the property relevant to modern visitors.
The result is a hotel that feels connected to its surroundings rather than isolated from them.
The Appeal of an All-Inclusive Las Vegas Stay
Las Vegas isn't traditionally associated with all-inclusive accommodations. Hotel rates, resort fees, meals, drinks and other expenses are often handled separately, which can make estimating the total cost of a getaway more complicated.
The Plaza took a different approach when it introduced an all-inclusive room package in summer 2024.
The concept proved popular enough to return in subsequent summers, including 2025 and 2026.
For summer 2026, the hotel advertised packages starting at $104 per person per night, with resort fees waived and select food, beverages and amenities included.
The offer provided access to the rooftop pool, fitness center and self-parking, along with breakfast and dinner at participating dining outlets. Additional benefits included early check-in, bottled water and eligible beverages at designated bars.
These details illustrate an appealing approach to vacation planning: grouping common expenses into a single package so guests can better understand what their stay will include.
Of course, all-inclusive doesn't necessarily mean every expense is covered. Dining selections, drink service, taxes and other conditions can vary by package.
Travelers considering future seasonal offers should review the latest terms directly through the Plaza's official website rather than assuming that past benefits or rates remain available.
For visitors who prefer predictable travel expenses, the property's approach offers an interesting alternative to more conventional Las Vegas hotel pricing.
Rooftop Relaxation Above the Downtown Energy
Las Vegas may be known for its nightlife, but the desert sunshine deserves a little attention, too.
The Plaza's rooftop pool and recreation deck provide a welcome contrast to the energetic streets below.
Guests can spend an afternoon lounging beside the water, reserving a private cabana or enjoying refreshments without leaving the property.
The deck also features a hot tub, poolside food options and dedicated pickleball facilities, adding a recreational element that extends beyond the typical hotel pool experience.
For travelers planning a longer stay, these amenities offer a reason to spend part of the day at the hotel rather than constantly moving between attractions.
The rooftop setting is particularly appealing to guests who enjoy balancing busy evenings with quieter daytime activities.
After a morning exploring downtown, a few hours beside the pool can be exactly what the vacation needs.
It's a reminder that a Las Vegas getaway doesn't have to be scheduled from breakfast until midnight.
Oscar's Steakhouse Brings Classic Vegas to the Table
A hotel with this much history deserves a restaurant with a sense of occasion.
Oscar's Steakhouse, named for former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, delivers that atmosphere beneath the Plaza's iconic glass dome.
The restaurant combines traditional steakhouse dining with views overlooking the Fremont Street Experience, bringing together two distinctly Las Vegas pleasures: a memorable meal and an entertaining setting.
Prime cuts of beef, classic accompaniments and cocktails fit naturally into the restaurant's old-school personality.
The location makes Oscar's particularly well suited to an evening that begins with dinner and continues with a walk through downtown.
For visitors who appreciate restaurants that offer more than an elaborate menu, its connection to the city's history is part of the experience.
The Plaza's wider dining collection includes casual options as well, allowing guests to choose between a leisurely steakhouse dinner and a convenient meal before heading out.
Not every night in Las Vegas needs to be a major production. Sometimes a good dinner, a comfortable table and a view of the city are more than enough.
A Carousel Bar With Plenty of Personality
One of the Plaza's more distinctive additions is its outdoor Carousel Bar.
Situated near the Main Street entrance, the bar takes inspiration from a classic carousel, complete with a colorful, animated design that feels entirely appropriate for Las Vegas.
It's playful without losing its connection to the property's retro character.
Guests can enjoy cocktails while taking in the activity around the hotel's entrance, making it an appealing stop before dinner or an evening exploring Fremont Street.
The surrounding area also includes Pinkbox Doughnuts, adding another recognizable local favorite to the Plaza's street-level offerings.
These additions reflect a broader effort to make the property feel more inviting and connected to the surrounding neighborhood.
Rather than separating hotel guests from downtown, the Plaza brings some of the city's street-level energy directly to its doorstep.
Entertainment Beyond the Traditional Casino
Gaming remains part of the Plaza's identity, as it does at many longstanding Las Vegas resorts, but the hotel's entertainment options extend beyond the casino floor.
The Sand Dollar Downtown offers live music in a more intimate setting, while the property's showroom hosts entertainment programming.
The Plaza is also home to CORE Arena, an outdoor equestrian and multipurpose venue that has helped bring rodeo events and other competitions into downtown Las Vegas.
It's an unexpected feature for a hotel located in the middle of a major entertainment district.
Together, these venues give guests options that range from a relaxed evening listening to live music to attending a scheduled performance or special event.
That variety is especially valuable for visitors traveling with companions whose entertainment preferences may differ.
One person may want an evening at a steakhouse, another may prefer live music, and someone else may simply want to enjoy the atmosphere of Fremont Street.
At the Plaza, those experiences can fit comfortably into the same weekend.
Why Downtown Las Vegas Deserves a Place on the Itinerary
For first-time visitors, the Las Vegas Strip is often the obvious starting point. Its spectacular hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues have helped establish the city's international reputation.
But downtown offers something the Strip cannot entirely replicate.
Its compact layout makes it possible to experience multiple historic properties, restaurants and nightlife destinations without traveling considerable distances.
The Fremont Street Experience provides a dramatic centerpiece, while surrounding streets reveal smaller venues and a more eclectic dining and cocktail scene.
Staying at the Plaza places visitors at the heart of that activity.
The location is particularly practical for travelers who want to explore downtown on foot, although trips to the Strip and other attractions generally require transportation.
Visitors planning their accommodations should consider the type of Las Vegas experience they want.
Those seeking expansive resort grounds and major Strip attractions may prefer Las Vegas Boulevard. Travelers interested in history, concentrated nightlife and a more traditional downtown atmosphere may find the Plaza particularly appealing.
Neither experience is necessarily better. They simply offer different versions of the city.
What Travelers Should Consider Before Booking
The Plaza's combination of history, dining and entertainment makes it worth considering, but a little planning can help visitors choose the right stay.
First, compare room categories rather than assuming all accommodations offer the same views, layout or amenities.
Second, consider how much time you intend to spend downtown. The Plaza's location is a significant advantage for exploring Fremont Street, but less convenient if most of your plans involve attractions farther south on the Strip.
Third, review the hotel's seasonal packages carefully.
The Plaza has offered all-inclusive summer packages for several consecutive years, but rates, dates, participating outlets and included services are subject to change. A previous promotion should never be treated as a guarantee of future availability.
Finally, consider the atmosphere. Downtown Las Vegas is lively, particularly during major events and weekend evenings. Guests who prefer quieter surroundings should discuss room location and preferences with the hotel before arrival.
As with any luxury getaway, knowing what matters most to you is the best way to choose accommodations.
A Different Side of the Las Vegas Experience
The Plaza Hotel & Casino occupies an interesting place in a city famous for reinvention.
Its appeal isn't based on competing with the largest resorts or introducing the most extravagant attractions. Instead, it brings together a recognizable piece of Las Vegas history with contemporary comforts, memorable dining and entertainment that reflects its downtown location.
From dinner at Oscar's Steakhouse to an afternoon beside the rooftop pool, the property offers opportunities to experience the city without feeling obligated to spend every moment chasing the next attraction.
Its recurring all-inclusive packages also demonstrate how a traditional casino hotel can rethink the guest experience around convenience and value.
For travelers who appreciate character, thoughtful hospitality and a strong sense of place, the Plaza offers a compelling reason to discover — or rediscover — downtown Las Vegas.
