Too Many People Are Misusing The Powers of Goal-setting!

Being stuck at home for the vast majority of both 2020 and 2021 has taught many people the sheer importance of self-care and how putting in the effort to understand ourselves first is key to paving the way for more successful things in the future. Many people from all walks of life are emerging from their shells of complacency, with newfound strengths and the will to push forward to new heights.

However, one common hurdle that's causing countless people to stumble over and crash in the most horrific ways possible is their misuse of goal-setting. While the name may seem obvious from the get-go, many nuances must be addressed. Sure, many would argue that they have all their plans bundled up, ready to go, and are prepared for the worst-case scenario, but frankly, this isn't often the truth.

It's Not Incompetence; You're Just Looking At The Wrong Things

One major criticism we have with how people utilize goal-setting is that they're but a straightforward move away from getting it right, and it's not because of their incompetence and needing more time to master the skill. Still, instead, there's a conflict of interest between what they're trying to achieve and how they're going about it. We might sound like a broken record trying to pin the problem on your mindset, but it's not wrong that flipping this little switch is what's going to take you to the next level.

  • Failure To Confront Challenges Head-On: Firstly, when challenges start to pile up and feel insurmountable, most people look away and fail to confront them head-on. What's worse, they take this stance of overly positive thinking that everything will work itself out without putting in the effort to make a change. And while there is a time and place for optimism as a solution, too much can lead to ignorance and toxic positivity.
  • Forgetting The Importance Of Fun & Fulfillment: Secondly, when people set their goals, they follow through on the misconception that goals must consist of complex and near-unattainable objectives. Yes, it doesn't hurt to push yourself past your expectations and taking on personal challenges that will inspire you, but goals should intrinsically drive you forward and not bring you down. For example, an effective goal to set would be saving up your down payment for that dream house and lot instead of saying you want a mansion filled with supercars.
  • Neglecting To Review And Update Progress: Lastly, while goal-setting occurs at the initial stages of making your game plan, it's not something you forget mid-way through your progress. Far too many people neglect just how vital reviewing and updating your goals can be, and it's for this reason alone is why people can't adapt them accordingly. Circumstances change, and the odds might be skewed against you, so it only fits that you revisit your perspectives.

Take A Rain Check, Reflect On Your Current Position

Given these reasons to change, we strongly recommend everyone take a rain check and reflect on their current position as to the progress of their goals. You see, knowing where you stand and asking a few questions will give you a better grasp of how to approach things and whether your goals require a bit of reworking.

  • Are Your Goals Realistic And Within Reach: Sometimes, we end up pushing for goals that are still out of our league as of the moment, and while exciting ourselves up does make us feel good, it does come to bite us in the back once we realize just how painstakingly difficult the road ahead can be. So, instead of pushing for unrealistic goals, we recommend that you stick to those within reach and possibly slowly working your way up.
  • Your Motivations And Drive For Pushing Forward: Understanding your motivations for doing something is the foundation of making any progress at all, meaning that you don't want to go in blindly to the tune of reason but also following what your heart longs for. Every goal and plan will most certainly come into contact with adversaries that will make you question following through. Still, with your heart and emotions in the right place, anything and everything will feel possible.

Unlocking Your Full Potential

Overall, we want to remind everyone that goal-setting isn't just some trendy self-care tip you flaunt around with a pen and notebook on hand, but a life skill that can help you bring all four corners of your imagination into reality. Goal-setting's true nature is the capacity to unlock anyone's full potential, so don't let something as impactful as this go off to the wayside.
