What are the different types of garage doors?

Garage doors protect your car and anything you might keep in your garage. They help to insulate and protect your home, and they can even be part of the overall aesthetic of the abode. However, there are many different kinds of doors. The right one for you will depend on the type of security you need, what type of structure you have, and of course, your budget.

A lot of the cost will depend on the size of the door. Multiple doors will increase the price. If you want to add anything decorative, such as a window, you can expect to pay more as well.

Steel

Anyone who works in garage door sales can tell you that steel garage doors are the most popular. Their budget-conscious price has much to do with the demand for them.

Steel is efficient. Other kinds of doors may be subject to mildew and mold. Steel does not deteriorate the way that some materials do. High-quality steel will be tough to dent, and it is a material used for many different kinds of security products.

The main disadvantage to steel is that its R-value is not very high. The amount of heat flow resistance of any material is called its R-value. In other words, steel doors do not provide a lot of insulation on their own. You can have them insulated for an extra cost.

Wood

Wood is one of the most expensive materials a garage door can be made out of. The price you pay will depend quite a bit on the species of wood that you select. Hardwoods are popular garage door material. Some common woods are redwood, mahogany, and tropical hardwood.

Wood doors look beautiful, and there are so many varieties that you are sure to find one that will complement the style of your home. Wood can be detail for decorative purposes, and the better your house looks, the more its value will go up.

The primary disadvantage of wood is that it demands a lot of attention and maintenance. It is susceptible to natural deterioration, and it can get wood rot, mold, and mildew. It can also become infested with insects.

If you like the wood look, but you don't want to be bothered with the upkeep, you can always use faux wood. It provides beautification to your home, but it is much easier to take care of, and it is often cheaper than regular wood.

Glass

Nothing looks more futuristic than a glass panel garage door. Your home will have a thoroughly modern and classy look if you get one of these garage doors. If you have an office or home gym in your garage, it will flood the space with natural light.

Although we think of glass as weak and quickly shattered, garage doors are made out of tempered glass, easily as strong as wood. You will never have to paint a glass garage door even once.

The downside of glass garage doors is that they can be rather pricey, and repairs may require expert-level garage door repair in El Paso, TX to handle specialized components. The doors are heavier than traditional garage doors, and you might have to install a new door opener when you replace your garage door with glass.

Selecting the perfect garage door for your home can be a confusing task. Be sure to ask a salesperson about all of your options before making a final decision.
