Improving your mental health and happiness is something that you want to prioritize in life. In fact, it should be the thing that takes precedent over everything else that is currently happening in your life right now.
In order to boost your mental health and happiness, you want to incorporate some daily habits. These daily habits are only going to happen if you do them regularly. With that being said, here are several daily habits to incorporate and boost your mental health and happiness this year.

Get plenty of sleep and improve the sleep environment
Sleep is an important part of improving your mental health, and a lot of mental health in general can be attributed to not looking after your body properly. Of course, there are mental health problems that are much more complex and not applicable to simply getting more sleep.
However, for some, getting a good night’s sleep can do well to help bring one out of a period of sadness or depression.
With that being said, it’s good to improve your sleep environment in order to get a better night’s sleep. From wearing a sleep mask to help block out light, to playing spa music or white noise to keep any noise in or outside the home from waking you up.
The more sleep you can get, the better for your body to recover. That’s why it’s necessary to get around seven to eight hours of sleep on average per night, where possible.
Surround yourself with people who build you up
The people you surround yourself with really help to improve your mental health. That’s why you should be selective about who you have in your life. For example, you’ll want to cut out people who are tearing you down and are toxic to your health. Those who build you up are the ones you want to keep around.
Surrounding yourself with positive influences can also include emotional support animals. It’s worth exploring this as a potential avenue when needing daily emotional support in your life.
Start journaling
Journaling is a good way of getting all your thoughts and feelings onto paper. It’s something that really matters when it comes to your mental health. If you bottle everything up, then you’re more than likely to find yourself in a dire place mentally.
With journaling, it’s similar to keeping a diary, but it’s not as strict where you are required to fill in something every day. It might be that you just write some thoughts and feelings from the day at the end of the night in bed, or perhaps just write a few notes in the morning.
Think about what advantages journaling brings to your mental health, so it’s certainly something to try and create into a regular habit.
Set boundaries in both your work and personal life
Boundaries are always good to introduce when you need to set a barrier between certain individuals or situations that are making you feel uncomfortable or impacting your mental health.
Setting boundaries will help you draw the line and say no to people or situations that aren’t helping you in a positive way.
For example, you might be someone who actively finds themselves saying yes to everything. That results in being overworked and mentally drained. Setting boundaries so that you can say no is something that can make a big difference to your well-being.
There will be times when people overstep your boundaries, but it’s important to reiterate and reaffirm those boundaries so it doesn’t happen again.
Eat well
Eating well is an important part of boosting your mental health and happiness. While it’s good to eat well, you should also be enjoying food, even if it’s more indulgent for you emotionally than physically.

Consider what foods might be lacking in your diet now and think about what you might want to add or remove, where applicable. At the same time, if you’re looking to lose weight, focus on moderation and perhaps a calorie deficit.
Think about what you drink to,o as this can also contribute towards your health and wellbeing. Alcohol, for example, can be damaging to your health, and while it’s fine in moderation, some people end up having a reliance on it, which can prove dangerous.
Making changes to your diet and your drinking habits are two ways you can boost your physical health and general well-being.
Do the exercise you enjoy
As well as eating well, you should also think about how much exercise you do currently. That might be very little or it might be a lot, depending on what time you have available.
There are a lot of different exercise types you could look at doing, too, depending on what types of exercise you’ve tried before and what you enjoy. Think outside the box, rather than just the typical exercise classes you might go to.
You’ve got plenty of sports clubs and various other activities that you could do and will probably enjoy more. It might be worth going to these exercise classes or partaking in this sport with friends and family members who are interested in working out, so it keeps you motivated.
Limit your screen time
When it comes to managing your health and wellbeing, it’s good to limit your screen time so that you give your eyes a rest and your brain a rest too.
It can be all-consuming when your job involves staring at a screen all day. That’s why you should find opportunities where screen time can be limited to just as and when necessary. Digital detoxes might also be helpful to do when you need a break from social media. A detox can help to reset and take time elsewhere to enjoy other hobbies beyond just existing online.
These daily habits are just a few ways to boost your mental health and happiness. With that in mind, follow these tips and you’ll likely feel a lot better as a result of these changes.
