What to Know About Plastic Surgery
New technologies and innovative techniques continue to revolutionize the world of plastic surgery, offering clients a wide range of options for achieving their cosmetic goals. With the emergence of new tools and technologies, it is now possible to perform many procedures in-office, reducing costs, time, and recovery periods. This type of medical practice is commonly known as a med spa.
While most medispas are located in physicians' offices, they can also be found in non-traditional locations such as shopping malls, storefronts, and day spas/salons. These facilities offer a variety of procedures, including facials, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and pharmaceutical injections like Botox, Restylane, and Juvederm. Recently, the FDA approved the use of new collagen-based dermal fillers, such as Evolence, to correct facial wrinkles and folds. Another new technology is plasma skin resurfacing, which can help clients achieve their facial goals.
Latest Innovations in Med-Spas for Cosmetic Procedures
Minimally invasive body treatments, such as laser-assisted liposuction, have become increasingly popular and successful. The SmartLipo laser, approved by the FDA in 2007, is the first laser used for fat dissolution. The AccuSculpt/AccuLift TM Laser Lipolysis System uses photo-acoustic technology to emulsify fat, making it easier to remove during liposuction. This method can provide a more pleasing contour, regardless of the area of concern, and is suitable for patients aged 20 to 70.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website, the top five surgical procedures in 2021 were liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, tummy tuck, and nose reshaping. The number of reconstructive breast reductions for women increased by 2 percent in 2021, while the same procedure in men increased by 7 percent. Plastic surgery is not just for women, and teens are also seeking procedures such as acne scar treatments, otoplasty, breast asymmetry augmentation, and rhinoplasty.
In addition to cosmetic procedures, plastic surgeons also perform reconstructive surgery to correct impacted or maladjusted conditions. Reconstructive surgery can address bone fractures, developmental abnormalities, and tumors, resulting in both functional and aesthetic improvements. For example, rhinoplasty can modify a variety of nose conditions and correct breathing problems.
The Importance of Safety and Certification When Choosing a Plastic Surgeon
Before seeking a med-spa or plastic surgeon, safety and certification should be your top priorities. Choose a physician who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). An ASPS member is a doctor with more than six years of surgical training and experience, including at least three years specifically in plastic surgery. Their training and experience make them uniquely qualified to perform your cosmetic or reconstructive procedure.
There are currently more than fifty board-certified plastic surgeons in the San Diego area. To research doctors, visit the ASPS website at www.plasticsurgery.org.
