2012 Sport/Utility Range Rover

Receiving more than two dozen international awards in less than a year – including the elusive title of "2012 Sport/Utility of the Year by Motor Trend," Range Rover, the British moniker known for its rugged appeal and cutting-edge [luxury] sport SUVs since 1948, has once again captivated a worldwide audience. As their latest addition to the 2012 lineup, Evoque – available in a two-door coupe or four-door model, debuted this year as the smallest, lightest and most fuel efficient Range Rover to date.

Sporty and distinguished, the new Range Rover Evoque – first appearing as a near-production concept [Land Rover LRX] at the North American International Auto Show in 2008 – is taking the world by storm; nearly 18,000 vehicles were pre-ordered even before the model was available, with dealerships already sold out during their fall debut in the U.S. With premium craftsmanship and performance – values that remain at the core of Land Rover’s very identity, the new addition has been widely praised for its class-leading technology, novel features [such as Terrain Response providing all weather, all surface capability] and Adaptive Dynamics with Magnaride – giving an ever compliant ride; not to mention sustainability-conscience engineering that boasts reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

"The Evoque is an incredibly exciting vehicle that joins a product range which across both of our brands is the strongest we have ever had - and it fits in perfectly," commented Dr. Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer. "It is a groundbreaking product, a Range Rover with concept car looks, lightweight technologies and the capability to deliver [28] mpg fuel economy. At the same time, it’s still a true Range Rover that’s agile, nimble, designed to survive in the urban jungle and capable of tackling the toughest climates and terrains thanks to Land Rover’s legendary all-wheel drive expertise."

Produced in Halewood, England, Evoque offers excellent control and an impressive ride; and its credentials are quite comparable to several Audi and BMW models of note.

  • Full-time intelligent all-wheel drive with electronically controlled Haldex center coupling
  • Powertrain: all-new 240 horsepower [251 lb-ft of torque] Si4 turbocharged direct injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission
  • Suspension configured for dynamic and agile handling across varied terrain, available with Adaptive Dynamics featuring MagneRide magneto-rheological damper technology
  • Dual Screen technology [8-inch touch-screen display] permitting the driver and passenger to see two different images on the same screen at the same time (which unfortunately is still banned in the U.S.)
  • Achieves an estimated 28 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city
  • Weight saving was a primary objective in its development, and engineers have applied a range of advanced lightweight materials to make this the lightest Range Rover model ever, with the four-door starting at just 3,902 lbs

According to Range Rover, Evoque’s exterior features new interpretations of classic Range Rover design cues – including the signature clamshell bonnet, the floating roof and the solid ‘wheel-at-each-corner’ stance. And unlike any previous model, the Evoque adopts a very dynamic profile with its rising beltline and muscular shoulder that runs the length of the car, along with a distinctive taper to the floating roofline; the sculpted corners reduce the car’s visual overhangs front and rear. The two-door coupe option is new for Range Rover, but also the basis of the vehicle’s much-praised appearance; and the excitement is justified with combined appeal for driving, agility and looks.

"The Range Rover Evoque is a bold move into the fast-growing compact luxury SUV sector," said Angus MacKenzie of Motor Trend. "Refined and capable both on and off the road, it artfully combines traditional Range Rover values with stunning state-of-the-moment design and impressive efficiency."

Range Rover Evoque is available in a wide range of colors and finishes, based on three distinct designs: Pure, Prestige, and Dynamic.
