At the eastern edge of Virgin Gorda, a glass-walled wellness space extends over the clear waters surrounding Oil Nut Bay. Sundara Spa at Oil Nut Bay brings massages, skincare rituals, yoga, meditation, and sound-based experiences into unusually close contact with the Caribbean landscape.

Opened in 2025, Sundara Spa + Studio is described as Virgin Gorda’s first overwater spa. Rather than relying solely on tropical décor to establish a sense of place, the building keeps the water visible through nearly 360-degree views, expansive glass walls, and underwater windows positioned within the treatment spaces.

Shortly after opening, Sundara received regional recognition from the 2025 World Spa Awards.

An Overwater Spa Shaped by Its Setting

Sundara was created by designer Jenn Zella of CID Design Group and architect Carlos Agelet De Saracibar of OBMI. Their approach places natural light, water views, and understated materials at the center of the experience.

Two glass-enclosed treatment rooms look directly over the sea and include underwater viewing windows. Light wood, woven textures, neutral finishes, and restrained lighting complement the surrounding colors without attempting to reproduce them artificially indoors.

Operable glass walls allow parts of the spa to open to the breeze when conditions permit, while climate-controlled spaces provide an alternative during warmer or more humid periods. The combination gives guests a choice between greater exposure to the island environment and the controlled comfort expected from a high-end spa.

The facility also incorporates a wellness studio, hospitality bar, boutique, and areas for hair and nail services. Its relatively compact collection of treatment and movement spaces suggests a more intimate experience than that of a large destination spa complex.

Seaweed Treatments With Measured Expectations

VOYA, an Irish skincare company known for using hand-harvested Atlantic seaweed, serves as Sundara’s signature product line. Its formulas appear throughout the spa’s body treatments, massages, facials, and smaller enhancements.

Seaweed has attracted interest in cosmetic research because marine algae contain minerals, polysaccharides, and other compounds with potential topical benefits. One controlled study indexed by the National Library of Medicine found improved skin hydration from a cream containing a specific Laminaria japonica extract.

That limited finding does not establish that all seaweed treatments remove toxins, improve circulation, or create lasting changes in skin firmness. At Sundara, those broader benefits should be understood as spa and product claims rather than guaranteed medical results.

The spa’s seaweed-focused options include the Seaweed Leaf Wrap, a 90-minute ritual currently listed at $350. The service begins with body exfoliation before sheets of Laminaria seaweed are placed against the skin. The spa positions the experience as moisturizing, soothing, and softening.

The 75-minute Ocean Essence Body Wrap is currently listed at $320. It uses Fucus serratus seaweed and is described by the spa as a hydrating and conditioning body treatment.

Guests interested in facial care can choose the 60-minute VOYA Skin Renewal Facial. The service combines cleansing, massage, a treatment mask, and products selected according to the guest’s skin concerns. It is currently priced at $230.

Massage and Tailored Spa Experiences

Sundara’s current menu extends beyond seaweed wraps. The 60-minute VOYA Aroma Touch Massage is priced at $210, while the 90-minute version is $310. Essential oils and botanical body products are selected to complement the massage and create a more personalized sensory experience.

The menu also includes the VOYA Deep Muscle Melter Massage, designed for guests seeking firmer pressure and focused work on areas of muscular tension. As with any massage, guests should discuss injuries, sensitivities, pregnancy, or medical concerns with the therapist before the treatment begins.

For visitors who prefer several shorter services, Sundara Spa Time combines four 30-minute experiences into a two-hour appointment. The current $420 package includes a radiance facial, Celluma LED mask with an arm, neck, and shoulder massage, a back massage, and either reflexology with a leg massage or a pedicure.

This format may suit travelers who want variety without committing to a multiday wellness schedule.

The Four-Day Sundara Renew Journey

Sundara Renew is now an established four-day offering rather than an upcoming retreat. Priced at $1,220, the program organizes four treatments around themes associated with water and air.

The journey begins with the Seaweed Leaf Wrap. The second day includes the 90-minute VOYA Massage Journey, which combines full-body massage with assisted stretching and focused attention on the scalp and face.

On the third day, guests receive the Ocean Essence Body Wrap. The final day concludes with the VOYA Skin Renewal Facial.

The program also incorporates a Celluma Pro LED mask during the seaweed body treatments, a lava-shell enhancement during the massage, and a VOYA Marine Eye Treatment with the facial.

Because the experience requires four consecutive days and several specific appointment times, it should be arranged before arrival rather than added casually after check-in.

Yoga, Meditation, and Sound

The overwater studio allows Sundara to function as more than a collection of treatment rooms. Private yoga instruction can be adapted around experience level, mobility, flexibility, or strength. A 60-minute individual session is currently listed at $170, with an additional charge for extra participants.

Thirty-minute mindfulness meditation sessions are priced at $120 for an individual. Sound-healing sessions, available as an additional experience following yoga, use singing bowls and sustained tones to encourage a quieter, meditative atmosphere.

Claims that particular sound frequencies physically heal the body remain broader than the available evidence supports. Their more defensible value lies in helping some participants slow their breathing, focus their attention, and temporarily disengage from external distractions.

The studio has also hosted occasional full-moon yoga and meditation programming. These experiences depend on the resort’s calendar and should be confirmed directly rather than assumed to occur during every full moon.

Staying at Oil Nut Bay

Oil Nut Bay occupies approximately 400 acres at the eastern end of Virgin Gorda. It operates as both a villa resort and a private residential community, with low-density development spread across the property.

Overnight guests stay in individually designed villas and suites rather than a conventional hotel tower. The resort also includes beaches, swimming pools, restaurants, tennis and pickleball courts, a children’s club, hiking routes, water activities, and Marina Village.

The residential component helps explain the property’s layout and sense of privacy, but detailed home-site inventory and real-estate pricing are not essential to understanding the spa. For travelers, the more relevant consideration is that accommodations vary significantly in size, setting, occupancy, and nightly rate.

Sundara is one part of the wider Oil Nut Bay experience rather than a stand-alone wellness resort. A stay can therefore combine structured spa appointments with beach time, boating, dining, and other island activities.

Can Outside Visitors Book Sundara Spa

Sundara Spa is available to Oil Nut Bay homeowners, overnight resort guests, and outside visitors. All appointments are offered by advance reservation.

Outside access is particularly useful for travelers staying elsewhere on Virgin Gorda or arriving by yacht in the North Sound. However, visitors should confirm their treatment time and transportation before traveling to the property because Oil Nut Bay cannot be reached by car.

How to Reach Oil Nut Bay

Oil Nut Bay is accessible only by boat or helicopter. Travelers can fly into Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Tortola or the smaller Virgin Gorda Airport, after which the resort team can coordinate onward transportation.

American Airlines operates service between Miami and Tortola, while other routes may connect through San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, or Antigua. Flight schedules and seasonal availability should be checked before travel.

Helicopter transfers may also be arranged from Tortola, St. Thomas, San Juan, St. Maarten, and other regional departure points. Oil Nut Bay’s heliport provides on-site customs and immigration facilities for qualifying international arrivals.

Guests traveling by air and boat should arrange the entire transfer sequence through the resort whenever possible. Separate bookings can leave travelers vulnerable to missed connections, ferry limitations, customs delays, or late arrivals after scheduled boat service has ended.

U.S. travelers need a valid passport to enter the British Virgin Islands and should review current government entry guidance before departure.

Where Sundara Makes Its Strongest Impression

Sundara’s appeal is clearest when the promotional language is set aside. Two treatment rooms and one flexible wellness studio would be relatively modest in another location. Positioned above the sea with underwater windows, opening glass walls, and wide views across Virgin Gorda, those same elements become distinctive.

The treatments remain spa experiences rather than medical therapies, and expectations surrounding detoxification, physical healing, or lasting changes to the skin should remain measured. What Sundara can more credibly offer is skilled bodywork, thoughtfully structured rituals, and quiet time in a setting that keeps the Caribbean visible throughout the experience.

For guests already considering Oil Nut Bay, Sundara adds a meaningful wellness dimension to the stay. For outside visitors, it creates an opportunity to experience the property without booking an overnight villa, provided both the appointment and transportation are arranged in advance.
