The journey throughout higher education looks a little different for everyone. Some people find the course that’s perfect for them from the beginning, some people have to chop and change, and some people decide now is not the right time for them and come back later. All of these approaches are valid, and everyone finds what they’re happy to do at their own point in life.
However, if you’re someone stuck at a crossroads right now, you’re probably worried you’ll never quite finish your higher education journey. After all, you hate what you’re doing, but you have no idea what else you could be doing! And that’s the kind of conundrum this post is here to help with. If you want to refocus your career sights, here’s how you can do so.

Take Some Time to Work Things Out
There is no time limit on training for a career. You can drop out right now and take another 20 years if you so wish - a college with the best program for you will still be there when you’re finally able to make the right decision.
Of course, most people don’t want to wait that long, but it’s something many students often need reminding of. As such, don’t feel you have to make a choice right now between the education you’re currently pursuing and something else that might suit you better.
The more you rush a decision like this, the more likely you are to make another choice you’ll end up regretting. Take some time to truly work out what you want from your future and then go from there.
Apply for a New Loan
Many students who end on the wrong higher education pathway worry most about what it will all cost in the end. Going onto higher education isn’t cheap! So when you decide that your efforts would be better spent on something else, it’s natural to panic and wonder how you’re going to afford signing on to a new course.
However, you can apply for new Student Loans at any point in your educational journey. If you want to pivot and try out something else, whether you’re still an undergraduate or you’ve already gained a degree and want to go a step further, there will be financing options out there for you.
Step Out of Student Life
Being a student means living the student lifestyle, and that always comes with a few caveats that don’t quite live up to the standard of the outside world. As such, if you feel like you’re at a turning point in your educational career, take a step out of what you’re used to.
In doing so, you can see what else is out there, discover other options for the future, and get a little bit of life experience that will be invaluable to the decision you have to make to go forward.
Refocusing when you’re stuck on a higher education pathway that doesn't suit you is not impossible.
