The sun was just beginning to set over the Pacific, casting a golden glow on the iconic Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. The anticipation in the air was palpable, as it always is on Opening Day. The seaside track, steeped in history and elegance, was ready to welcome a new season of thrilling races and luxurious events, promising a summer of unforgettable experiences.
A Storied Tradition
For generations, Del Mar has been the epicenter of Southern California's racing culture. Established in the 1930s by Bing Crosby and his Hollywood friends, the track has always combined glamour with the excitement of horse racing. This year, Opening Day was set for Saturday, July 20—a historic occasion as it was the first time in decades the event fell on a weekend.
The Opening Day Extravaganza
As the gates swung open, a sea of elegantly dressed racegoers flooded the grounds. Women in stunning hats and men in sharp suits strolled through the grandstands, embodying the timeless charm of Del Mar. The day’s highlight was undoubtedly the Hats Contest, where creativity and style took center stage. From elaborate floral arrangements to whimsical designs, the hats were as diverse as the crowd itself.
Amidst the fashion and festivities, the races themselves held everyone’s rapt attention. The thunder of hooves, the cheers of the crowd, and the exhilarating photo finishes created an atmosphere of pure excitement. But the fun didn't stop there. The Opening Day Party and the official After Pony Party ensured that the celebration continued well into the night, making it a day to remember.
Sipping and Savoring at the Del Mar Beer Festival
The following day, the Del Mar Beer Festival provided a perfect complement to the high-energy Opening Day. On Sunday, July 21, from 1 to 5 p.m., the festival transformed the track into a paradise for craft beer enthusiasts. More than 50 local and regional brews, ciders, and seltzers were available for sampling. Guests paired their drinks with gourmet food from various vendors, while live DJs set the tone for an afternoon of relaxed indulgence. Tickets, starting at $38, ensured that attendees 21 and over could enjoy this exclusive, ticketed event.
Exclusive Perks for Diamond Club Members
The excitement continued with Free & Easy Thursday, starting July 28. Diamond Club members enjoyed exclusive perks, including free Stretch Run admission, a complimentary program, a free seat, and significant discounts on refreshments. This weekly event showcased the club’s commitment to rewarding its loyal patrons, offering an enhanced experience at the track.
Friday Happy Hour Delights
Friday Happy Hour at Del Mar became a new summer favorite, beginning July 26. Racegoers could enjoy half off all signature drinks for two hours after the first post. This offer, though excluding the Turf Club restaurant and bar, provided a delightful start to the weekend. The combination of world-class racing and refreshing cocktails made Fridays at Del Mar an unmissable event.
Experiencing the Exclusive Turf Club
Starting July 26, every Friday transformed into a luxurious affair with Turf Club Fridays. The ordinarily members-only Turf Club opened its doors to the public, offering a premium experience. For $125 per person, guests received Turf Club admission, two drink tickets for premium cocktails, wine, or beer, and access to an appetizer buffet. Adherence to the dress code was a must, ensuring the event maintained its sophisticated ambiance.
Gourmet Sundays with Taste of the Turf Club

Sundays at Del Mar became synonymous with culinary excellence, thanks to the Taste of the Turf Club event. Beginning July 21, this weekly event offered a three-course brunch, a reserved Turf Club table, bottomless Bloody Marys or mimosas, and general parking for $150 per person. The blend of gourmet dining and the thrill of the races made Sundays at Del Mar a must-attend for food lovers and racing enthusiasts alike.
Early Mornings with Daybreak at Del Mar
For early risers, Daybreak at Del Mar provided a serene start to the day. From 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday, starting July 21, guests enjoyed complimentary coffee and breakfast while watching morning workouts from open-air table seating. Horsewoman and racing broadcaster Michelle Yu provided insider insights, making this free event a favorite among those looking to experience the quieter side of the racetrack.
The Thrill of Racing
Throughout the season, the thrill of racing remained the heart of Del Mar. The first post daily was at 2 p.m. until August 31, when it moved to 1:30 p.m. Fridays featured a 4 p.m. first post, with exceptions on specific dates. The meticulous planning ensured that every race day was an event in itself, combining the best in horse racing with the unique charm of Del Mar.
