Most schools, colleges, and universities rely on donations and government grants. If you are the headmaster of a school or a stakeholder in one, raising funds is likely your main concern. The more money generated, the more access to learning resources students will have. Unfortunately, fundraising is something of an art. It takes a lot of practice and years of experience to perfect it. This post helps to make the process of fundraising a little easier by telling you how you can raise money for your school.
Read-a-Thon
More and more schools are using read-a-thons to earn themselves money. A read-a-thon is one of the best school fundraising ideas there is, because it allows you to generate donations whilst ensuring students are learning. A read-a-thon is a competition to see which participant can read the most amount of books in a fixed period of time, i.e., a week. Make sure that you verify students have read the books they purport to have. You can question them about the books just to verify they aren’t exaggerating. Donations can be made online and the winner should be given a prize.
Bake Sales
Bake sales can be held on school grounds. You can ask parents to bake at home, then bring their bakes in to donate. All proceeds from bake sales can then go into your charity pot. Make sure that if you are going to ask parents to donate their bakes that you only ask the best bakers. Your school’s bake sale needs to be professionally run and organized and that extends to the baking. Nobody is going to want to buy cakes that aren’t baked by pros. Alternatively, you can pay for cakes to be baked, then sell them for a larger markup.
Sponsored Runs
A sponsored run is another good way for you to generate a little bit of money. If you are planning on holding one, make sure that you enlist the support of students who are passionate about running. Parents and other students can also participate. Giving students who’re interested in running an opportunity to participate will let them know you care about them and their passions, making you seem like a much better headmaster in their eyes than you might have previously seemed.
Afternoon Tea
Afternoon tea is a popular British activity. It involves sitting down with a selection of cakes, one’s friends, and different flavours of tea. Afternoon tea is something you can hold for parents. All profits generated can be committed to the cause you are fundraising for. Make sure that you sell tickets to afternoon tea. If you are going to hold an afternoon tea, you need to make sure that you make the environment the gathering is held in as relaxing and elegant as possible. Afternoon teas are quite serious affairs, so they should be meticulously organized, and all cakes provided should be delicious and carefully baked.
Car Wash
Holding a car wash and getting students involved can be a very fun way for your school to host a fundraiser. Car washes that involve students should be held on days when the weather is warm. Holding them on days when the weather’s not very good could lead to them catching colds or getting ill. Make sure you compensate them for their involvement. A good way to do this is to take them on a day out or offer them free food, i.e., pizza or some other kind of takeout. Ensure however you compensate students that it’s done affordably, since the point of a fundraiser is to earn money, not lose it.
Auction
An auction can be another good way for your school to raise money. You can auction off items the school already owns or ask people to donate items, then auction them. The profits of each item sold should be then used towards the cause you are fundraising for. Make sure that if you are going to sell other people’s items (and they do not want to donate them) that you charge a fee so that your school at least earns something. Holding an auction can be very profitable so definitely give it some consideration. Book sales are also an educational and relevant way to earn money.
Dinner Party
A dinner party could be an effective way to compel parents and investors to donate money to your school. At your dinner party, take the podium and explain the importance of the cause that you are trying to fundraise for. Explaining this to people and then opening up the floor so that donations can be made can be a good way to get people donating. Asking a room full of people to donate can be effective because human competitiveness will inevitably kick in and people will gradually start trying to outdo each other with their donations.
Dance-a-Thon
A dance-a-thon can be a very fun way for students to contribute toward your school’s fundraising efforts. You do not necessarily have to just hold one form of fundraising. It’s very common for people to host multiple methods of fundraising at a single event. You could devote an entire day to fundraising, holding read-a-thons, bake sales, book sales, a dance-a-thon, and a dinner party. Holding multiple forms of fundraising can be a good way to generate money. Make sure that you advertise your fundraising efforts on local radio or in the newspaper. Advertising your fundraising efforts will spread awareness and get more people involved.
Spelling Contest
A spelling contest is one last method of fundraising for you to consider. It’s also a good way to test your students’ intellectual abilities. Make sure that if you are hosting spelling contests, you give parents the opportunity to sponsor their children. You also need to make sure that you compensate the winning students. Giving winning students a prize shows that you are not just driven by your own fundraising needs but also your students.
Fundraising can be challenging. With this post’s guidance it no longer needs to be. If you are planning on launching a school fundraiser, make sure that you give the suggestions made here some consideration. The different forms of fundraising mentioned in this post are all effective ways of generating money and interest in your cause.
