When your home is broken into, it changes your life in big ways. It is an expensive endeavor as you repair any damages inflicted during the incident, as well as replacing some of the items stolen. It means that lost sense of your peace of mind that your home was your safe sanctuary. It means hours of cleanup that leaves you experiencing a myriad of emotions. Fortunately, there are some simple ways to keep your home safe.
Alarm Systems Reduce Risk
Using an alarm system is always a top recommendation amongst the experts. They are often very easy to use and can do more than just sound a loud alarm when someone breaks in. An alarm monitoring system can include a camera system for both inside and outside of the home and have a pair of eyes watching for suspicious activity. Furthermore, signs provided by the alarm company can also act as a deterrent to any prowlers contemplating a break in.
Get a Dog
It may sound old-fashioned, but it’s true. Burglars are not going to be interested in your home if you have a large breed dog living there. German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Boxers, Saint Bernards, and Rottweilers are perfect for families as they are gentle with the residents of the home and will protect them at all costs. If you are allergic to doggy dander, a short hair breed will be your best bet. You get the best in protection and a fantastic addition to your family.
Watch Your Windows
Glass doors and windows near your door are a huge no-no! It is incredibly easy to smash the window and open the door. Burglars just need a minute or two to get in and out, windows make it easy. Make sure you also purchase windows that are reinforced to make it hard to smash, like using Plexiglass.
Avoid Tall Shrubs
Tall shrubs create space for a burglar to hide and break in without anyone witnessing them do it. Of course, you should be able to plant what you like, just keep things trimmed and neat so that your neighbors can note any unusual occurrences.
Throw Some Light On the Situation
One of the best additions to your home is the motion sensor floodlighting around the exterior. Whenever anyone walks by at any time, the lights automatically go off. Your guests will appreciate the automatic illumination to their cards and burglars will avoid your home at length.
Turn It On Remotely
If you remember the scene in Home Alone when the child made it look like there was a party in the home, you can use that to your best advantage. Let’s say you are taking a weekend trip to a neighboring state or city. Using timers on the living room lights and switching your television on from an app on your phone will give the illusion that someone is home. Most burglars prefer to hit homes that aren't occupied, so it’s a great deterrent.
Fencing Slows Them Down
Fencing is a good way to protect the home from someone getting close enough to break in. Privacy fences aren’t necessarily the ones you want, wood and chain link fences are your best options. They create a barrier but if someone climbs over it, they can be witnessed in action.
There are many simple steps you can take to protect them home. You may find you only need to take one precaution whereas others may want to employ several. You won’t have to get everything right away, get them one at a time within your budget. What tips do you have to offer to protect your home from burglars?
