I had the distinct pleasure of stepping behind the wardrobe doors of none other than Marie Green — tastemaker, philanthropist, and a true sartorial force in San Diego’s style scene. Known for her cool confidence, timeless taste, and a closet that effortlessly blends high fashion with heart, Marie is the kind of woman who makes getting dressed feel like an art form. In this edition, we talk wardrobe philosophy, standout silhouettes, her passion for Wag & Purr, and how she’s using fashion to make an impact, one well-dressed step at a time.

Spoiler: She makes effortless look extraordinary.
(Dean Hall) Marie, your style is effortlessly elevated—how would you define your signature look?
(Marie Green) My style is one that embodies a chic yet effortless look featuring tailored silhouettes. I favor high-quality accessories to blend elegance with comfort. Also, perfect tailoring goes a long way!
(DH) What are three pieces in your closet you’ll never part with—and why do you love them so much?
(MG) Three pieces I will never part with include my iconic Hermès Birkin bag—a gift from my late husband, Dennis. Next is a black leather biker jacket from Tom Ford’s final Gucci collection, bought many years ago during a memorable shopping trip with my bestie Amy; Lastly, I treasure my perfectly fitted black leather Balmain blazer. This purchase was strongly encouraged by my very fashionable friend Rita. Each of these items holds a special place in my wardrobe and my heart.
(DH) Five things currently in your handbag.
(MG) Currently, my handbag contains five essentials reflecting my style and practicality: a Prada keyring I picked up during a recent trip to Italy with my amazing friend Randi, my trusty iPhone, a sleek YSL wallet gifted by my beautiful daughter Vanessa, Retrouvé daily defense hand cream, and a Victoria Beckham lip gloss for a perfect pop of color.

(DH) Heels, flats, or sneakers?
(MG) I love heels for special occasions, but sneakers for a laid-back yet chic vibe dominate my current daily shoe wardrobe. I also love a great pair of boots. Each pair serves its purpose!
(DH) Two closets—dead or alive—would you raid without hesitation?
(MG) If I could raid any two closets, they would undoubtedly belong to my fabulous friend Christina Marie and the iconic Victoria Beckham. Christina Marie’s wardrobe is a treasure trove of stunning designer pieces that beautifully blend her chic, sexy, and highly elevated style. On the other hand, Victoria Beckham’s collection epitomizes sophistication and timeless elegance, complemented by impeccable tailoring. Both closets inspire me and would undoubtedly elevate my own style into the stratosphere!

(DH) Which designers or brands are currently speaking your fashion language?
(MG) The designers and brands that are currently speaking my style language include Saint Laurent, Celine, Balmain, and L’Agence, along with denim brands Mother and Paige. Also, I can't neglect Alo for athleisure!

(DH) As a stylish woman in the city, how do you see San Diego’s fashion scene evolving?
(MG) The fashion scene in San Diego has definitely evolved. A simple stroll through Fashion Valley or UTC reveals a plethora of major designer retailers, showcasing the exciting accessibility of high-end fashion. It’s thrilling to witness this transformation and see how our city embraces style.
(DH) What’s your go-to outfit formula when you need to look impeccable in under 15 minutes?
(MG) My go-to for getting ready in just 15 minutes consists of a pair of perfectly fitted jeans, a tailored top, and a designer blazer. I complete the look with a great handbag, fine jewelry and either boots or heels, and I’m all set! For evening outings, I opt for a fitted midi dress paired with heels and a leather jacket draped over my shoulders for an effortlessly stylish vibe.
(DH) Do you believe in fashion rules—or is style all about breaking them with intention?
(MG) I typically consider myself a rule follower, but when it comes to fashion, I believe in breaking the rules if it looks good! Style is all about self-expression, and I like experimenting with different combinations that challenge conventional norms. After all, the best outfits are the ones that make you feel confident. I have a long standing joke with my dear friend Cini Robb regarding trends...I like to point out something that's on trend and she always says I don't care!
(DH) You’ve been on the committees for FACE Foundation events with style and heart—how did you first get involved with the organization?
(MG) I first became involved with the FACE Foundation in 2012 while serving as the Director of Training at The RealReal during its startup phase. Cini approached me with the idea of making the FACE Foundation an actual client. This innovative approach allowed individuals to donate to the charity without writing a check; instead, they could contribute items from their closets. The FACE Foundation would then consign these items, with the proceeds going directly to the charity. We named this initiative 'Closets for a Cause.' Over time, this program evolved into Wagnpurrshop.org, a shopping website where all profits are dedicated to supporting the FACE Foundation.

(DH) Fashion and philanthropy go hand in hand in your world. What makes Wag & Purr so personally meaningful for you?
(MG) The revenue from Wag and Purr goes directly to the FACE Foundation, which is dedicated to saving the lives of pets in need of emergency veterinary care. I personally experienced the importance of this cause years ago when my dog, Isabel, was bitten by a rattlesnake. The antivenom treatment cost thousands of dollars, and without the ability to pay for it, she would have faced euthanasia. It breaks my heart to think of those who can’t afford veterinary care and the potential loss of their beloved pets. That’s why I support this foundation—it saves lives and keeps families together.

(DH) You have an IG Live sale coming up with none other than Christos Garkinos—a resale and celebrity fashion icon. What can we expect from this glam collaboration? and when is it?
(MG) We are thrilled to announce the partnership with Christos, who has just released a new book, "Covet the Comeback!" He will be hosting one of his famous Covet by Christos Instagram Live sales on June 10 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. This is an exciting opportunity to engage with him and purchase some amazing and highly coveted items online!

(DH) You have opted to donate some pretty fabulous pieces. Can you share some stories behind them?
(MG) Cini and I, along with our friends, have meticulously scoured our closets for the most coveted items to donate to this sale. We’re talking Chanel, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Brunello Cuccinelli, Celine, Fendi, Dolce and Gabbana, and more! This collection is sure to impress, and above all, it supports the FACE Foundation in its vital mission.
