Elevate Your Basic Tee With These X Accessories

One of the most surprising fashion trends of the last couple of years was the return of basic tees. Yes, like the phoenix rising from the ashes these subtle and subdued t-shirts have been revived in the modern fashion consciousness. But with this reemergence comes a new series of questions. Namely, how can I create a look with a basic t-shirt that doesn’t look…well, basic? I’m so glad you asked because as many of my readers know, I am a fashionista who is always happy to share their knowledge of all the hottest in haute couture. When it comes to the t-shirt we will tackle this topic from three different directions. Our color palette, the way our shirts fit, and how we will place the t-shirt into the larger ecosystem of our outfits. Don’t worry you’re in safe hands, so let us shove off on our intrepid voyage. Into what it means to make an outfit revolve around a casual tee!

First, the Fit

The first thing we should take a look at when it comes to the classic t-shirt is… What kind of fit are we going for? You see, the way a shirt fits helps to dictate the style of the outfit you’re wearing. For instance, if you’re looking for a classic look straight out of your dad’s polaroids. Then the tighter the tee the better. Place that tee with some nice form-fitting jeans, and you’ll be looking like a greaser in no time! But what if you want something a little more current? A little more in the direction of streetwear? Well, that’s easy! You just size up. Getting an oversized t-shirt and pairing it with a baggier pair of cargo pants is a great way to pull off this look. Just remember that all t-shirt sizing is different, so if you’re looking to size up. It’ll take some trial and error to get the sizing right. But don’t be discouraged; once you find the right fit you’ll rock it! Finding the right fit for your tee isn’t easy. But once you figure out the look you’re going for, you’ll find the rest just seems to fall into place!

Accessories!!

Now that you have the skeleton of your style down, it’s time to decorate! No outfit is complete without a few key pieces that make that boring basic tee, into the bedrock of your outfit! For those who are looking to add a bit of a modern flair to their looks, my first suggestion is to create a stack of chains. Now, what do I mean by a stack? Well, I’m so glad you asked! One of the key trends in modern fashion is the wearing of multiple chains. These can be shorter, choker-style necklaces, or even pendants. The important thing is to mix and match your chains into a look that compliments you and has you feeling confident! Lately, I’ve even been going for the two-pendant look which can be hard to stack, but I feel that they create a sizzling summer outfit! Others like to go for a shorter chain such as a Cuban link and pair it with a pendant. This creates a beautiful balance for your look! Whatever you decide once you get the stack that works with you, you’ll be on the cutting edge!

Now that we’ve covered your neck, let's talk about your wrists. Whether it's a bracelet or a watch, having something that adds a pop of contrast to your wrist adds a nice detailing that can set off any look! My advice is to let this accessory be secondary. What I mean by that is to let the rest of your outfit dictate the look of your watch or bracelet. For instance, if you have a silver necklace? Go with a silver watch band. If you’re looking for something with more pop? Try to spice up the rest of the outfit along with your wrist. It’s an important lesson to remember that your wrist accessory is there to complement your outfit not define it!

When you’re crafting an outfit, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. If you’re not constantly studying, and looking forward to all of the newest moments in fashion, it’s hard to believe that you’re on the cutting edge of all the latest looks. Don’t worry, like the adage says every journey begins with a single step! If you stay on this path you’ll be stunting with the best of them in no time! Just remember all because a piece of clothing may initially seem “basic” what it is, is subtle and subdued and an integral part of the greater constellation of your outfit. Every piece is considered. Every piece is important. And as long as you keep that in mind you’ll be dressing fine, in no time!
